Hello Ant_Foale,

According to Apple, the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter should allow you to charge the iPhone while using the AV ports.

I don't have such an adapter but I've had similar issues with another adapter (Belkin 3.5mm with Lightning port and plug). I had to plug and unplug the adapter several times for my iPhone to show it was charging. Since then, I don't have to fiddle with it: my iPhone automatically charges while listening to music.

I would suggest connecting only a charging cable through the adapter to verify that your iPhone charges. Then, plug in the HDMI cable.

That's because HDMI does not provide enough power to charge your iPhone.

  • Standard HDMI ports provide only 5V at 50mA (0.25W), which is far too low for charging a smartphone.
  • The iPhone 15 requires at least 5V at 1A (5W) for basic charging and supports up to 27W fast charging via USB-C.
