Mail locks up when clicking the close ("X") button

Macbook Air, running Sequoia, 15.3.2, using an M1 chip. Mail seems to work except when one clicks the X to close it, it just hangs up. No windows close. Force-quit is necessary to get rid of it.

I have exhausted all the online answers I can find. Every suggestion tried. Most postings seem to be about random lock ups, lock ups when opening Mail and so on, nothing that I could on this problem. This happen ONLY when clicking the close button. If I use the menu to close Mail, that works with no problem.

This is a friend's machine. I am trying to help. (She's not what you would call a power user... let us say.)

Thanks for any suggestions

Since we have no idea what you have already tried that didn't work, I only have three suggestions:

  1. Boot up her Mac in Safe Mode. Try exiting the Mail app by selecting the "X" button.
  2. Create a new standard user account on her Mac. Log out of her existing account, and then, log in with the new account. Again try exiting by using the "X" button.
  3. If neither of these help, then the next step would be to contact Apple Support directly for further assistance with this matter.

Thanks for you suggestions.

At some point that behavior stopped happening. Suddenly it was working correctly. I do not know what fixed it, as I did several things. Might even have been a corrupted email (as some have suggested) that was deleted as I was "testing" the system.

I hate it when a problem fixes itself without letting me know what was up.

I appreciate the help.
