Face recognition to unlock iPhone

How can I tell if there’s another face that can unlock my iPhone and how can my iPhone tell if it’s me or not with setting up the alternate appearance?

Hello,

With your iPhone you can check which Face ID appearances you have set up.

Go to Settings, then tap Face ID & Passcode. If asked, enter your passcode. From there, you are able to see if an alternate appearance is set up for your iPhone. If one is set up, there will be a button to remove it, if there is not, there will be a button to set up an alternate appearance.

If you want to be sure that you are the only one who has Face ID set up on your iPhone, you can reset it and enrol again. To do so, tap "Reset Face ID" on the page mentioned above, and then follow the steps in this guide to set up Face ID again: Set up Face ID on iPhone - Apple Support.

Your primary Face ID and your Face ID alternate appearance are separate, so they could technically be of two different people. It is important to note that you cannot check who the Face ID appearances are for, or when they were made, just whether they are present or not.

I hope this helps!

To check if another face can unlock your iPhone, you can review your Face ID settings. Here's how:

1. Check Alternate Appearance:

- Go to Settings ➡️ Face ID & Passcode.

- Enter your passcode.

- If the Set Up an Alternate Appearance option is available, it means no alternate appearance has been set up. If it's not available, an alternate appearance (or another face) has already been added.

2. Reset Face ID:

- If you're unsure about the alternate appearance, you can reset Face ID and set it up again.

- Go to Settings ➡️ Face ID & Passcode ➡️ Reset Face ID.

- After resetting, you can set up Face ID for yourself and decide whether to add an alternate appearance.

Regarding how your iPhone distinguishes between faces: Face ID uses the TrueDepth camera system to create a detailed 3D map of your face. It continuously learns subtle changes in your appearance, like growing a beard or wearing glasses. When you set up an alternate appearance, it expands its recognition to include a second face or a significantly different look for you. However, it doesn't differentiate between the primary and alternate faces and it treats both as equally valid.
