iPhone 15 volume does not go down when it’s ringing and you look at it.

For the last few years with iOS, when your phone is ringing and you pick it up and look at it the ring volume gets lower, but I’ve noticed with my iPhone 15 and iOS version 18.3.1 this doesn’t work anymore. I’ve tried turning the Face ID switch on or off, in settings which doesn’t make any difference And reinstalling iOS. Still doesn’t work properly.

Q1. “As I said in my comment, I’ve tried it both ways on/off neither works.”

A1. I provided that as a reference, just to be certain it had been done correctly.

Q2.I was able to go into my local Apple Store and talk to a genius and he said that it’s not the first time that he’s heard of this issue so makes me feel a little bit better that is not just my phone!

A2. Report this to Apple:

Even if you spoke with someone at the Apple Store, you should also give feedback on this to Apple. I don’t have this issue. So, the Question is: "Just how many people have actually reported it to Apple?"

So, do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of you occurrences, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

Report it, once more.

Back Up, and then Factory Reset This:

You may want to backup your iPhone to a computer, and then try resetting this to Factory Settings. Once it is set up, you can add items back by enabling them in iCloud settings. Take some screenshots of what you see on each home page, so you can recall what apps go where, when you add them back. The whole point of backing up your iPhone to a computer prior to the factory reset is so that you can have something to restore it from in-full, should anything go wrong afterwards.

OK, here is an update.

It seems that if your phone is unlocked, not pointed at your face or eyes it will start ringing when somebody calls you at a loud volume.
If you turn the phone towards your face/eyes, the volume will go down.

So the functionality works as expected unless you’re trying to get it work through the lock screen which it used to do.. So it seems that the problem may be in the interface between your eyes, the lock screen and the ringer volume.

After it validates who you are using Face ID, it will silence the ringer. Right? Are you tapping the screen to wake up the device, so it can scan your face?

Also have you tried pressing the lock button if your phone rings while it’s locked? That will usually silence notifications.

I’m talking about reducing the volume level of the ringtone as it’s ringing if you look at it, whether you have your phone set up to unlock with your face or not.

If the phone is ringing, and you look at it, yes it will unlock, but it will continue to ring at full volume. The only time that it will reduce volume is, if you happen to be doing something on your unlocked phone already.

For years you didn’t have to do anything special.

If the phone is sitting on a table and it rings or an alarm that you’ve set rings all you had to do is look at the phone and it would reduce the volume of the ring.

But yes like I’ve said it works properly if the phone is unlocked and you’re looking at it.

Yes. So all you need to do is look at your screen, let it scan your face, and it’ll shut off. Which means, there was nothing wrong to begin with?
