It quickly connects via bluetooth and then disconnects. I have tried to power down both units, forget devices, reestablish connection by pairing, using same apple id's just can't get them to bluetooth, any suggestions

I am trying to get an extra external screen. I bought external screens and they did not work, and I looked this up and it said it worked, but I guess not. How do I get an external monitor to work with this new laptop?
You connect your iPad to an external display using a wired connection:
