Why does my iPhone 16 Pro Max play audio at max volume when disconnecting from CarPlay or AirPods Pro?

First off, this is inconsistent, but it happens frequently.

If I am listening to audio via Apple CarPlay, then turn my car off and open the door of the car (fully disconnecting from CarPlay) my iPhone 16 Pro Max will start playing audio at full volume through the phone speakers.

If I am listening to audio via my Air Pods Pro, then remove them and put them in the case, my iPhone 16 Pro Max will start playing audio at full volume through the phone speakers.

This occurs mostly with Spotify, but also with Libby and Audible.

I didn’t have this issue with my iPhone 13 Pro using the same iOS, the same CarPlay, and the same AirPods Pro.

Please help!

It's likely that your iPhone 16 Pro Max is playing audio at max volume after disconnecting from CarPlay or AirPods Pro because the device is reverting to the last volume setting used before connecting to those devices, rather than automatically adjusting to a lower level.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Volume Reset:
  • When you disconnect from CarPlay or AirPods Pro, your iPhone might not automatically revert to the volume level it had before those devices were connected.
  • Default Behavior:
  • Instead, it might default to the last volume setting that was active, which could be the maximum volume if that's what you had set before connecting.
  • Check Volume Settings:
  • To address this, you can manually adjust the volume on your iPhone to a lower level after disconnecting from CarPlay or AirPods Pro.
  • Bluetooth and Volume:
  • If you have other Bluetooth devices connected, ensure that their volume controls aren't inadvertently affecting the iPhone's audio output.
  • Voice Control Conflicts:
  • In some cases, conflicts between Voice Control and CarPlay can cause unexpected audio behavior. Try toggling Voice Control off for a few seconds to see if it resolves the issue.
  • Check Audio Source:
  • Make sure your car's audio system is set to the correct source.
