VIP email alerts are not working on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max. I migrated everything across from backup. I had VIP alerts setup on my old iPhone and they just worked without issue. A sound would play as soon as a VIP email came in on the Mail app. However, on my new phone it just isn’t working, nor can I get it to. I have tried following various instructions online and on Apple forums, and nothing has worked. Pretty much the only thing I haven’t tried is wiping my entire phone and starting again from scratch. Of course it doesn’t help that iOS has various settings buried all over the place – Notifications/Focus/Mail config/etc – all of which can impact the outcome. Anyway, I’m out of ideas so though I’d raise the question here in the slim hope that someone may have the answer. Perhaps it’s an iOS bug, because I just don’t understand how setting something so simple as a Mail alert can be so difficult to achieve! TIA!

Temporary Solution: Restore VIP

Notifications in the Mail App on iPhone (iOS 18.4.1)

Solution

tested in consultation with Apple’s senior support

Step 1 – Temporarily disable Mail for all accounts:

Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts

Select each account (iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

Toggle off the Mail option for all accounts

Step 2 – Delete the Mail app:

Press and hold the Mail app icon on the home screen

Select“Remove App” and confirm

Step 3 – Reinstall the Mail app:

Open App Store

Search for “Apple Mail”

Download and reinstall the app

Step 4 – Re-enable Mail for your accounts:

Go back to Settings > Mail > Accounts

Select each account and toggle Mail back on

Step 5 – Adjust VIP notification sound:

Choose a different sound (e.g., “Crystal”)

Wait a few seconds, then switch back to your preferred sound

Done!

VIP notifications with sound should now work as expected again, including push

delivery for iCloud Mail.

Thanks. I’ve tried all that. VIP mails are going into the mailbox fine. That bit isn’t the issue. It’s the alerts not sounding for a VIP mail arriving, so I get no notification, despite them being set to ‘on’ for VIP mails and a specific sound set (as per your clear screencaps). It just refuses to work. I’m beginning to suspect it’s a bug, especially as it sounded once for one VIP email the other day (I thought it had magically fixed itself), but it hasn’t done it again since.
