How do I pair a 1st generation Apple Pencil with a 6th generation iPad?

I have a 1st generation Apple pencil and a 6th generation Ipad. I have not used my pencil for awhile, I have charged the pencil by cable and by Ipad. It would not connect, I then told the Ipad to forget the pencil.

Sometimes a message appears about pairing when I plug the pencil into the Ipad, but it disappears again and if I get to click pair nothing happens.

It will depend on what "awhile" means. Lithium batteries, not just those used in the Apple Pencils, if left discharged for long periods of time (think months or years) will eventually lose their ability to be recharged. Based on what you provided in your post, this may be the case here.
