Why does my iPhone keep searching for Wi-Fi instead of switching to cellular?

I've been frustrated recently because when I go to the gym, their wifi is non-existent. I think they're cheap so they don't want to use their wifi. The wifi keeps searching and becomes intermittent.

But instead of going automatically to cellular data (yes, it's toggled on), it keeps searching. So I basically have no internet connection unless I turn off the wifi.

find that I have to turn off wifi EVERY time.

Shouldn't this be automatic? I know that it should switch to cellular when wifi is slow or poor, but instead, it keeps searching. I does this EVERY time.

Furthermore, if I'm someplace, and I choose not to connect to the wifi (even though there's a strong signal), shouldn't it automatically switch over the cellular?

I just find it odd that it wouldn't be automatic, and I have to actually physically turn off the wifi on my phone.

What exactly does "non-existent" mean? Does this mean that there is no Wi-Fi signal at all?.....or did you really mean to say there is Wi-Fi, but it does not work well?

Same questions.....If they are cheap and don't want to use their Wi-Fi....then there would be no Wi-Fi signal at all. But, you go on to say that Wi-Fi is intermittent. Which is it?

If there is Wi-Fi and your iPhone has ever connected to the Wi-Fi network in the past, the phone is going to try to connect if it detects any hint of the Wi-Fi signal.

If you don't want the iPhone to even try to connect to the Wi-Fi network, you need to delete the settings for the network on your iPhone. Then.....the iPhone will not attempt to connect to the Wi-Fi network at all and it will connect using Cellular.

I see. Well, I’ve never heard of the iPhone being capable of doing what you’re describing. But maybe another Community member has, and will share his or her knowledge.

In the meantime, you can share your thoughts with Apple here, and if it’s enough of an issue for you, consider reaching out to Apple Support:

It's hyperbole, Bob. I consider it practically non-existent, as it connects then disconnects constantly...literally for seconds at a time before it disconnects and starts searching again.

But my point is still the same. Is the iphone not capable of recognizing when it does not have consistent wifi to switch to cellular data when it disconnects and is not able to connect right away?

With technology today, is an iphone not capable of going back and forth uninterrupted between wifi and cellular data?
