How do I fix incorrect date and time on my MacBook Air?

Unlike my phone and watch and iPad the MacBook Air (up to date software) is often but not always showing the wrong date and time. Traveled to CA from NY and it never switched and yes the toggle was on for that. A few days ago, my laptop said it was 5:01 PM and it was 6:40 PM. Just got home and it was Sunday night at 11:45 PM and the laptop said Sunday morning at 4:03 AM. Open to suggestions. I have turned set date and time automatically on and off and on again. I have reset it when the auto set was off and it holds for a few hours and then goes time traveling on its own again.

You can set it manually, no harm there—if the option Automatic is not working.

check and compare your time— https://time.is

Typically "Automatically" you expect to work as designed...

for an ongoing issue—

From the Terminal.app copy & paste:

sudo rm /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist

this will remove the corrupt plist.

(note—your psswd will not echo on screen type it in anyway, use the enter\return key to proceed. Quit Terminal.)

Reboot and compare your results.

if necessary you can resync with Apple's time server, copy & paste:

sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com
