iPad 2024 M2 Screen Freeze

Hi, my iPad screen keeps intermittently freezing when scrolling websites. I don’t have multiple tabs open when this happens and it is not website specific. Most of the time, I have to completely close the screen by swiping up and then reopen safari in order to view the page again. Sometimes if I wait 3-5 mins the screen will unfreeze without the need to close down the screen. I do use a VPN but other than that I haven’t added any additional apps. I also have a really old iPad circa 2016 that works fine, uses the same VPN and never freezes so I don’t understand what the issue is with the M2 IPad? Can anyone help. Thanks

Do you see the same behaviour with the VPN App/profile removed from your iPad? If the problem persists with the VPN removed from the iPad, you'll need to delve further into troubleshooting.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, the next step is to reset the iPad's network settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Should the problem continue, you will need to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to restore the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:

Without delving into the inner workings of the iPad's network stack, perhaps suffice to summarise that the stack is complex; two otherwise identical iPad's with the same installed Apps might not, necessarily, exhibit the same errant behaviour.

Removing the VPN and reseting the network connections may be all that is required to resolve the problem - after which, if successful, you may be able to reinstall your preferred VPN configuration without further issue.
