Whether you need a VPN hinges on the type of internet use. For routine tasks like chatting, browsing, or checking travel information, a VPN is typically not required. However, for any activity involving sensitive data, such as financial transactions, accessing email, or logging into accounts containing personal information, a VPN is strongly recommended.

Note: Public Wi-Fi networks (e.g., in cafes, airports, hotels) are often unencrypted, making it easy for hackers to intercept your data. A VPN encrypts your internet traffic, protecting sensitive information like passwords, emails, and financial details.

It's important to understand that while Apple's Private Wi-Fi Address and iCloud Private Relay offer enhanced privacy, a full-fledged VPN from a reputable provider offers a broader range of protection. Here's a breakdown of the advantages of a VPN:

Key Differences and Advantages of a VPN:

  • Comprehensive Data Encryption:
    • A VPN encrypts all internet traffic from your device, regardless of the app or browser you're using.
    • iCloud Private Relay primarily focuses on encrypting Safari web browsing traffic.
    • This means a VPN protects all your online activities, including email, apps, and other internet-connected services.
  • Enhanced Security on Public Wi-Fi:
    • VPNs provide a secure, encrypted tunnel, protecting your data from potential threats on public Wi-Fi networks.
    • While Private Relay offers some protection, a VPN's comprehensive encryption provides a stronger defense against hackers and snoops.
  • Private Wi-Fi Address & Private Relay: You cannot change your location, only obfuscate your IP address.
