How to manage albums in iPhone 12 Photos app?

I would like to know if when the photo app on 18.3.2 was written did the software engineer forget to place the ALBUM switch on the first screen, or if is it going to remain as it is now forever, if so I will have to buy my self another phone as I can not live with My IPHONE 12 with IOS 18.3.2 as it has already caused me serious problem, as when to show a client a picture they could see all my pictures before I could change the view to select a folder with the picture I wanted to display.

regards Alan

When I open Photos, this is what I see:

I don't have to flip a switch or whatever to get from a "Home" window to an "Albums" window-- "Albums" is just right there. I'm not sure how that could be easier.

As Phil0124 and Yer_Man have each said, you can make whatever you want appear right up front. You just go to Customize at the bottom of the Photos window

and click that to get the Customize menu

to move Pets or Albums or whatever you like to be the first thing you see. You can un-check all the things you don't want to see.

I've just got to say, all you had to do was ask how to do this-- something you never did. Including statements about how annoyed you are or threatening to buy a different brand just doesn't help. We are not Apple; folks who read these posts are just users like you. Some of us hang around here from time to time in case our experience may help someone. We don't get paid and we don't have a schedule, and the Apple engineers don’t read the stuff, here. Most importantly, we do not have to respond to posts that put us off.

If you would like to make suggestions to Apple, go here:

Feedback - Photos - Apple

Here's a hint: Remember that the person who reads your post probably is in no way connected with the cause of your rant, and on this site we only answer the questions we want to. And it does no good to threaten to dump Apple--you'll just attract more angry people who won't and can't help, and you'll turn off the people who can. I'm sure that everyone thinks that, really, you should use whatever platform works best for you, so it makes a pretty empty gesture, anyway.

I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to. The Photos App has an entire section devoted to Albums (not a switch). You can place that section anywhere you want to even at the very top of the Photos App so its the first thing you see, so you can quickly select an Album if that is what you want.

click here ➜ Customize the Photos app on iPhone - Apple Support

Outside of that, your best course of action is to pre-select an album you want to show before being with a client so it's ready to go when you open the Photos App.

Also, threats don't work here. If you need to buy different phone that meets your needs better than an iPhone, then by all means do so. We have no vested interest in your choice of phone.

To quote a movie. "you keep using that word, [switch], I don't think it means what you think it means".

A switch is something you flip on or off. Albums on iOS have never been a switch. They've always been a section you enter.

They still are. As has already been mentioned, you can set albums to the very top of the screen or just under the gallery if you want to. You can customize the Photos app anyway you want to and place the albums section anywhere you want to. Please read the support document linked in my previous response.

here it is again. click here ➜ Customize the Photos app on iPhone - Apple Support

Don't keep embarrassing pictures in your iPhone you don't want clients to see them.

But what you show is not the opening screen of Photos! You're showing the Library, just like if you had tapped the Library button in the old style. The Library view shows, well, the whole Library! Again, just like the old version!

The opening screen is named Photos, like I showed earlier.

In the opening screen, the most recent pictures from the Library are at the top, and the other collections, like Albums, are at the bottom. You have to scroll up to get to the Library.

You have 5 pictures across, but I've zoomed mine for 3 across. For the Library, zoom is at the bottom

as a sub menu of the sort button, in View Options.,

This is the same in Albums.

The Home screen is exactly like the old version but, instead of a button for Library and a button for Albums, you scroll up for Library and down for Photos. Easier than ever!

You have a square grid view rather than one showing the aspect ratio. Square fits more pictures on a page. The choice is in the View Options menu. Since mine is already in Aspect Ratio Grid, the choice is to change to Square:

This is the same as in previous versions.

Hi I have changed the two albums copied on to my phone (MAC) as somebody thought I had embarrassing pictures but they were in fact prints by Vettriano which are for sale.

Below this is the first screen I see when I open Photos and as you can see the total top of the screen is full of pictures and if I place my finger on the screen and move my finger down the screen I see the rest of the 79 pictures and the title of the screen changes to LIBRARY and adds a date at the bottom I can change it from ALL to MONTHS or YEARS and the number of order and size of pictures change. Regards Alan

As explained in the terms of use you agreed to when you signed up, you’re not talking to Apple here. The people responding are Apple users like yourself. That's what this forum is - users reaching out for assistance, assistance being given by other Apple users.

So if you want to ask Apple a question you'll need to contact them directly.

In the meantime have you considered creating your own Albums Shortcut? Scroll to the very bottom of the Window and select Customise & Reorder. Then check the box for albums and drag it to the top the list. Now back to the very top of the window, and when you open Photos note the little 'x' button at the bottom the screen Tap that and where does it bring you?

I should point out I do not keeps pictures on my phone in recent or favourites my pictures come from my PC. Before IOS 18.3.2 my phone was 17.7.7 when I used to open the photos app across the bottom of the screen was a switch called albums if that was selected you were show a screen with no pictures shown except the one on the front of each album form the folders copied on my PC (shown as from my MAC) then I could enter one of the folder and display all the pictures in just that folder, if I shut the photos app as it was, next time I opened the app I would see just the screen showing my ALBUMS. now under IOS 18 when I open Photos it displays most of the pictures on my phone ( and as I have selected, it will show lower down the screen the folders from my MAC I can then display just the pictures in that folder. but when I then close the Photo app. Next time I open the Photo app again I am again shown most of the pictures on my phone and again the folders are along way below. This can be very annoying and I can well imagine very embarrassing in some cases, in my case it cost me a sale as the customer preferred something I could not sell Regards alan

Hi I see something very similar but yours say albums mine says from my MAC, could be as have not created Albums on my phone at all, and at the top of the screen it displays most of the photos in the folders from my mac. i have used the customise option and selected from my mac and moved that to the top I also selected utilities and moved that up so it was below from my mac. I just as a test selected Albums but as i do not have any created on my phone it just created gay area saying no albums available create and the area moved as i moved the word albums up and down the list. but y issue is all the pictures from my mac folders being at the top. as your screen shot shows photos with a large number but only 9 pictures showing, the only way i can reduce the number of pictures shown is to hide them, when i do that all the hidden pictures disappear from the top of the screen, but also disappear from the from my mac folders and all hidden pictures are together to be seen in the hidden folder, so I am back where I started with all the pictures on display when I wish to show an item for sell, he picture is sitting next to item i am trying to buy from elsewhere. I think I would like to know how your screen shot only shows 9 pictues out of the nearly 17000 pictures it sys you have, as I have only found the hide option to remove them from the screen as i have just mentioned, and ding that to 17000 must take for ever as I only have two working folders for sae and to buy each have about 40 pictures and that was easy to handle on my PC as I add and remove items as i go and sync the hoe PC each night so in the old IOS phots were easy as I only open one folder depending on the customer

thanks for the interest.

when i say switch I mean the icon on the screen which then switches you somewhere else sorry.

On my photos app the top of my screen is just photos from my folders both folders from my mac and now folders created on my phone (last night i created an Album on my phone and placed pictures in it I used the customise and moved the album up the list so now I have from my mac at top then utilities then albums. on the first screen of photos i see 60 pictures squares which are all the pictures from all my albums (folders) except the pictures I have hidden all the hidden pictures are only in Hidden under utilities they do not show on the top part of my screen and do not so in there original album, so I am in the same situation as the items for sale are in the same album (hidden) as the item to buy, i am still unsure how you screen shot only shows a few pictures at the top of the screen from the thousands you have on the phone ? thanks again. "I don't have to flip a switch or whatever to get from a "Home" window to an "Albums" window-- "Albums" is just right there. I'm not sure how that could be easier."

If I understood apart correctly, the problem is not to find the albums, but to avoid the "Photos" section with the most recent photos being displayed above the albums.

Previously we had nice button, where we could toggle between the albums tab and the library views - days, months, years, albums. Now the "Albums" item will appear right in the middle of the display and the most recents items from the library are always revealed. This can be embarrassing, if someone is looking at our iPhone, while we try to find the album we want to show. And when we finally manage to find the album, where we want to select a photo to show to someone, there will be an irritating slideshow of all photos in the album, until we finally discover the menu, where we can stop the nonsense.

The new design has some nice new features - but there are too many gimmicks turned on by default. So we have to waste our time trying to find out how to disable irritating new features, to make Photos usable again, instead of exploring the iPhone to discover and enjoy new features and turning on the features we want.

I see that-- but didn't the previous versions open in Library, anyway? I doubt that anyone has a solution for people looking over your shoulder while hunting through embarrassing pictures. I think of my phone as a personal device. (An iPad is not so personal, though.) Of course, you can open Photos to Albums, and close it that way, and it will re-open in Albums next time. However, you have to go through that again after a shutdown.

But what about those embarrassing pictures that front each Album?

Nicely said! I've thought about this, too, and I don't see an obvious solution. Maybe a section all to itself of "New Features" rather than having them turned on all over the place. I sure would like to keep the crazy stuff, but keep it out of the way!

This new version is the first one that allows us to turn stuff off at all, so maybe it will get more customizable. Should we make our own phone?

I would not mind if it was just a few pictures showing at the top of the photo first screen, more so not care if they were only recent taken pictures, but the top of my screen show lots of (about 60) pictures from my albums which are from my mac. as I do not leave pictures in recent or memories in fact nothing but the pictures in the albums from my mac. regards Alan, and by the way I was not looking for a discount on buying a new phone, I was just pointing out how bad i feel about the change and the fact we are allowed to revert, i have been using Apple since i was once given a little thing called an Ipod shuffle and worked my way up buying most of the Iphone range. but will not be buying any more phones from Apple.

I don't get it-- how does your screen differ from mine that I showed earlier? My screen showed 9 pictures. Another difference may be that my albums are in folders, and I have 6 folders showing. Can you include a screenshot?

The difference is only in the number of photos shown in the top section of the page. You show 9 pictures mine shows 52 pictures which is all the pictures from my albums (all the albums are from my Mac as I do not have any albums created on the phone except while I tried creating some yesterday as a test and all that happened was more pictures appeared in the to of the screen and the only way I found to reduce the number of picture at the top end was to hide the pictures but then the pictures are hidden from the original album and can only be seen in the hidden album which is protected by password. I have now gone back to carrying paper picture to show people my phone is on 18.3.2 so the phone now is only used to let me listen to my music via Bluetooth in the car and on a boss docking unit but thanks for the help Alan
