How can I unmute conversations on Messages app

All my text conversations have a mute symbol (grayed bell with a slash through it) to the right of their names in the list of conversations. As a result, I don't hear any signal when a new message comes in. I went through the messaging section in settings and made sure "do not disturb" was off. I slid all the conversations to the left and turned off mute. Still, the mute symbols persist, and I do not hear when I get a new message.

When you slide left on the conversation and see the bell with the slash, that means your conversation is currently NOT muted. Tapping the bell with the slash will mute the conversation.

If you are not getting a Notification when a message come in then go to Settings > Notifications > Messages and:

Make sure Allow Notifications is turned on
All three alert types are checked
Under Sound, there is a sound set for the Notification.

And 2 other things to check are:

Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not turned on
Make sure you are not connected to a Bluetooth device where the sound would then be heard on that device. You can try turning Bluetooth off to check or disconnect any device that shows connected at Settings > Bluetooth.
