I have an old iMac that won't boot up (I think it's a startup disk problem). Is it possible to fix that and retrieve photos from this computer? What is the best thing to do?

It's impossible for us to tell from there if the Mac can be fixed, and certainly not with that amount of information. I would suggest you bring it to an Apple Store or Apple-approved repair centre. If they cannot repair the Mac they should be able to retrieve the hard drive from it, and yo may be able to rescue your photos from that.
However, don't you have a back up? Restoring rom that would be the least expensive and inconvenient solution.
