Why is iMac's sound volume significantly reduced for all types of audio?

Had this new iMac four days and the volume of music, videos, CDs played from my accessary CD burner/player (which worked great on the old iMac). Even the sounds associated with opening, closing apps, receipt of email or texts and everything else. Every volume control I can find is set at max
