How can I track a stolen iPhone with Find My?

Hello,

my phone has been stolen 3 days ago and “find my option” is on. My questions are-

  1. as it’s notifying me very late so I am kind of loosing the track. What should I do?
  2. My phone doesn’t have much charge, what can be the situation?
  3. I am based in UK, so is there any way the thief can change the whole set up?
  4. is there any way we can directly complain or notify Apple? Thank you.

There is no option for Apple to track your phone using any number, that is what the FindMy app is for. Cell Providers can track devices by using the cell towers it has connected to, but they are not providing that information unless it comes from a Search Warrant or Subpeona for the data, which is usually the case for missing or endangered persons. Never seen that done for a lost device.

What is the exact notification or message that you are receiving?

My phone doesn’t have much charge, what can be the situation?

I think have answered your own question. If the battery runs down, you won't be able to locate the iPhone using Find My. When you try to log on to Find My, you will see an "Offline" message.

I am based in UK, so is there any way the thief can change the whole set up?

No one will be able to access the data on your phone unless they know your iPhone's passcode. There is no way that anyone could ever guess your iPhone's passcode in the 10 tries allowed before the phone locks out and will not even allow any more log on attempts.

is there any way we can directly complain or notify Apple? Thank you.

Sorry, but Apple does not get involved with lost or stolen phones. All that you can do is follow the instructions in the Apple Support document linked below:

I am sorry that your phone was stolen, but you need to realistic about things here. Only a tiny fraction of stolen phones are ever recovered because the thief sells the phone as quickly as possible, often to a "fence" who then ships the phone to China to be remanufactured.

  1. Review the information here to mark it as lost and notify your cell provider. Don't remove the device from your account, that should only be done when you no longer care if someone else can reset your phone. Your data still would not be available to them as your phone would be wiped, but they would be able to set it up as their own. If your iPhone or iPad was stolen - Apple Support
  2. Your phone maintains a reserve charge for FindMy, but will eventually go dead if not charged. There is nothing you can do about that.
  3. No the thief cannot change your set up as long as you do not remove the device from your Account. Don't fall for any phishing messages that claim to be from Apple saying your phone has been found and you need to enter your account information. That could be the thief contacting you and is common when you enter contact details after marking it as lost. There is no need to enter your account details when using Notify When Found.
  4. Not sure what you want to complain to Apple about. With the protections in place, there is nothing anyone can do with your device and they will not be able to access it. That is good news for you. The longer it is gone, the less likely you are going to get it back.

I am getting notifications on email.

You need to ignore those attempts to scam you into providing more information. If the message appears to be from "Apple" or "Apple Support", this confirms that the message is a scam that is trying to trick you into clicking on a link or providing more information.

Remember that Apple does not get involved with lost or stolen phones, so the message cannot possibly be from Apple.

Do not respond to these messages.

I'm sorry, I don't understand.

Who are you requesting to find your phone? We have tried to help by providing you with the steps that are necessary to take when a phone is stolen.

You could report this to the police if you want, but you should not expect them to do much other than take down your information.

If you are able to set up "Lost Mode" on the phone, you can include your contact information, so if an honest person finds the phone, hopefully they will contact you.

You should put the phone into "Lost Mode". Go to the FindMy app, select your iPhone from the list of devices, then tap on "Lost Mode".

This will lock your device down and nobody can erase it, reinstall it with a clean iOS install, or steal data from it.
