I have an old Apple Watch and iPhone. I used to use them together for a while but then upgraded both. I charged them up recently and found the iPhone no longer saw the Watch so my question is, how long is it before an iPhone decides it needs reconnecting to a previously used Apple Watch?
Which watch and iPhone are you using?
Has the watch been set up with the same Apple Account?
You can erase the watch without the iPhone and pair it again after that. Have a look a the related article:

Thanks to the replies, but I think the thread is going off topic slightly, all I wanted to know was does anyone know how long it is before an Apple Watch/iPhone require reconnecting if they haven’t been used for a while. I have full access to both and don’t mind factory reseting them but I just wanted to know is it something like 30 days of not being connected to each for example?
Is the watch still listed in your Apple Account?

If the watch is not been listed in the WatchApp under "My Watch" anymore, did you pair the watch to your new iPhone, without restoring the new iPhone from the backup of the old iPhone?
Have you reset both devices?
I can't remember that I have read in an Apple Watch User Guide, that you have to use your watch from time to time, before it will be unpaired automatically from the iPhone.
