To expand on Saegzz's response, you can use iMessage (blue) while on WiFi. Whether or not you can send SMS/RCS (green) will depend on your carrier. If your carrier provides WiFi calling, you should be able to. Contact your carrier for more details.

While you're on the phone with your carrier, ask them about their international roaming packages. Depending on your carrier, you may find that they are quite reasonable.

People can use something like WhatsApp to message people using Wifi without fear of SMS/MMS issues. My brother's wife is from Brazil and when they go there to visit her family, they don't get a roaming plan. We just communicate via WhatsApp or FaceTime calls.

But wouldn't you have to arrange ahead of time for everyone to use WhatsApp? I haven't used it in years so I know longer really know how it works.

If you open chats in WhatsApp, there's a green circle with + at the top right hand corner. That takes you to your contacts list, where you can add people. But whoever you add has to also have WhatsApp and I would recommend testing it with the people you'd want to chat with before leaving the country.
