Sounds & Haptics - Functional Issues with Ringtone and Alarm Volume Controls

On iPhone, since OS18 we have various step backs in sound volume controls that are not expected nor user friendly.

Various features aren't aligned, and here is the list.

Issue 1: Silent will mute the alarm!

  • Upon update, in Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and alerts
  • - Change with Buttons > default is ON

This means that if a user puts a phone to silent, alert will not have a sound!

What happened to me: I overslept the meeting, as this type of mute never existed on any phone! Imagine you wake up and see your phone display on and alarm visual on it, in hopes to wake you up!

Issue 2: Buttons will impact ringtone AND ALARM!

I don't want my phone to ring for a call, but for sure I need alarm to have a sound

Issue 3: Because of the above impact on alarm, I don't want buttons to control also ringtone (alarm is the most important one to stay loud, that's why I can't control ringtone with buttons)

iOS now has customizing control center, however it has exactly the same control as buttons, but not a separate bar to control ringtone nor alarm.

Overall, I feel like team making these adjustments either doesn't use iPhone, or has hypothesis that are not aligned with the real life needs :D.

Solutions (many ideas, pick one or two or more)

  1. Easiest one - remove controlling alarm sounds with buttons. Alarm is always ON sound.
  2. Separate ringtone and alarm control to "Change alarm with buttons" and "Change ringtone with buttons"
  3. ^ I still can't believe somebody made these two needs equal, and somebody OKed it.
  4. Add separate controls for Control Center: 1. apps volume, 2. notification volume, 3. ringtone volume, alarm volume. Android has this since forever, so just use it. It simply - WORKS.

Thank you, and I hope somebody picks this up and fix it.

There could be several reasons why your alarms are not sounding or vibrating. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Make sure that the volume is turned up and not on silent or vibrate mode. You can check this by using the volume buttons on the side of your iPhone or by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and adjusting the volume slider.
  2. Verify that you have selected a sound for your alarms. You can do this by going to the Clock app, selecting the Alarm tab, and tapping "Edit" in the top left corner of the screen. Then, tap on the alarm you want to check and make sure you have chosen a sound.
    1. Probably you have set the Alarm Sound to NONE. Watch the GIF below
  3. Check for Do Not Disturb or Bedtime Mode: If you have Do Not Disturb or Bedtime Mode enabled, your alarms might be silenced. Check the Control Center or Settings to ensure these features are disabled.
  4. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  5. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  6. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

Apple, like any other tech company, designs its software and features based on broad user needs, industry trends, and internal innovation. They aim to create a seamless experience for the majority, but no software can perfectly cater to every individual’s preferences or use cases.

If a feature doesn’t work as expected or is missing, providing feedback to Apple through their Feedback Assistant (beta.apple.com) or Apple Support (apple.com/feedback) can help influence future updates. While not all requests are implemented, Apple does take user feedback into consideration when refining its products.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

Yes, thank you for the answer. I don't need to restart. Also silent, focus or anything like it, should NOT impact the alarm. At least it has to have its' own control independant from anything else.

Let me put you in the situation to explain the level of my frustration:

iOS updates. "Change with buttons" is default ON. I'm not even aware of the change. I lay down to sleep and put phone on Silent, so notifications can't wake me up. However I DO have alarm set for the morning to go on a plane with absolute certanty my alarm will wake me up (this is expected since first mobile phones, and until recently on iPhone)

Hour after I should have been woken by the alarm, I wake up and see my phone shows alarm on the display, however no sound.

This is not a bug, it's now "expected behavior", and you can check it on your phone. I don't need to check any setting, or restart the phone, or expect that any focus or silent mode should silence the alarm.

I'm being clear that this "improvement" needs to be improved yet again, and I offer a few solutions for Apple to consider, as usecase for Ringtone and Alarm are not the same, and controling those volumes shoild be separate if they really even want to have control over Alarm volume.

Apps and features designed for iOS may not be available on Android, and vice versa, due to differences in their ecosystems, development frameworks, and business models.

Mobile brand/model selection is an individual choice based on many parameters. Such as Money, Feature, Status, Aesthetic, Utility, User-Friendliness, Availability, Warranty Coverage, Service Support, Resale value, Technology and many other factors. Choose yours judiciously!

Thank you. I was using Android as a reference. I'm on iPhone, obviously, and I take Android because they already have a solution to this "issue"

You can completelly focus on the problem, and ignore any solution ideas I offered, or references.

problem statement: ringtone and alarm are not the same! As a user I want to silence my ringtone while I want my alarm to be loud.

i want to be able to quickly change The volume of the ringtone (when in meetings, church, class, school, sleeping...) while I do want my alarm to wake me up for those events by beong loud. I also increase my ringtone volume when I'm not in the listed events, at home, simply because I want to hear the phone and answer the call.

Changing the volume few times a day in settings, with the chance to forget and oversleep important event (again), is not user centric, and also can have seriuos consequences. OS now has a tone of places to introduce this alarm volime control separate from ringtone (control center, or even revert to alarm being volume agnostic) but stating that this is made with the user in mind, is simply wrong, or to be precise, edge case of silent alarm becoming a main use case we have on the phone now is... groundbreaking silly.

With respect, unsatisfied alarm and ringtone user.
