Logic Pro will not open correctly, and you've tried everything! FIX!

There are many people out there who experience Logic malfunctions of various types. There is a specific issue that no one seems to have had a fix for. You can go through all of the well known steps and checklists you can find online that claim to fix Logic failing to open or constantly crashing, but nothing works.

The issue is when you click on the Logic Pro icon it opens, so you see the little dot under the icon, and you see the Logic Pro menu bar at the top, but the app doesn't actually launch. It does not scan Audio Units or open any projects. You can move around the menu but most items are greyed out and you cannot even open a new project. If you have this problem, I may have a solution for you. It worked for me. First I uninstalled all 3rd party plug-ins. I did NOT touch any Apple native plug-ins.

Since the issue is with launching the app correctly, I looked deep into the program files and components. I found something called com.apple.LaunchServices. I then Googled it and found that this file can in fact be corrupted, causing certain apps to fail during launch. DO NOT DELETE THIS ITEM. The fix is a Terminal command, so you must open the Terminal app.

You type the following into Terminal: sudo killall -9 LaunchServices and hit ENTER

You can restart, or just try to open Logic. Right after I ran this command, I was able to open Logic and everything was back to normal. I just have to reinstall 3rd party plug-ins. Below is a list of issues that should be fixable with this terminal command, just so happened it fixed my specific issue as well. Also note why you should NOT delete the com.apple.LaunchServices component.

You shouldn't typically delete com.apple.LaunchServices files or the Launch Services database itself, as it's a core macOS system component. Instead, you should focus on troubleshooting issues related to Launch Services, such as incorrect file associations or duplicate "Open With" menu entries.

Here's a breakdown of why and how to address Launch Services problems:

Why NOT to Delete:

  • System Component:
  • Launch Services is a vital part of macOS that manages document-to-application bindings, keeping track of which applications can open which file types.
  • Data Loss:
  • Deleting Launch Services files or the database can lead to system instability and potential data loss.

Troubleshooting Launch Services Issues:

  • Incorrect File Associations:
  • If a document is opening with the wrong application, you can change the association in the "Get Info" window for that file type.
    • Double-click a document, then Control-click the application icon in the Dock.
    • Select "Options" and then "Show in Finder" to find the associated application.
    • If there are multiple versions, select the correct one in the "Open With" menu.
    • Click "Change All..." to apply the change to all files of that type.
  • Duplicate "Open With" Menu Entries:
  • If the "Open With" menu shows duplicate or incorrect applications, try rebuilding the Launch Services database.
    • Use Terminal: Open Terminal and run the command: sudo killall -9 LaunchServices.
    • Rebuild: Restart your computer, and Launch Services will rebuild the database.
  • Launcher Utilities Issues:
  • If launcher utilities (like Quicksilver or LaunchBar) are having problems opening applications, resetting Launch Services might help.
    • Use Terminal: Open Terminal and run the command: sudo killall -9 LaunchServices.
    • Rebuild: Restart your computer, and Launch Services will rebuild the database.
  • Persistent Crashes:
  • If you're experiencing crashes when accessing menu items in applications, resetting Launch Services might resolve the issue.
    • Use Terminal: Open Terminal and run the command: sudo killall -9 LaunchServices.
    • Rebuild: Restart your computer, and Launch Services will rebuild the database.
  • Error -10810:
  • If you encounter error -10810 when launching applications, resetting Launch Services can be a solution.
    • Use Terminal: Open Terminal and run the command: sudo killall -9 LaunchServices.
    • Rebuild: Restart your computer, and Launch Services will rebuild the database.
