Apple TV4K 3rd generation use with HDMI Audio Extractor

• Verify that the adapter is HDCP compliant. Commercial 4K content requires HDCP v2.2 or later. HDCP v1.x would be sufficient for HD content.
• Verify that the adapter has the wanted HDMI version. Commercial 4K content requires HDMI 2.0 or later.
• 4K HDR 60Hz 4:4:4 chroma requires HDMI 2.1 or later for all equipment involved, as such HDMI bandwidth would exceed HDMI 2.0 specs. 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 would be just as good though, as all streaming video has 4:2:0 chroma anyway. Chroma subsampling would be a setting on the Apple TV box.

I read somewhere that a HDMI extractor stopping working after a software update on ATV4K

I don’t think that there is any truth to that. tvOS didn’t change HDMI output as such.

Many users can do without an HDMI Audio Extractor (with optical output), when their TV can perform this function:

• Apple TV →[HDMI]→ TV →[optical out]→ audio system

Just set your Apple TV box to output audio to the “TV speakers”, but also set the TV to output audio over the optical connection.

the adapter works well with a Roku stick and a Blueray player.
