Apple TV4K 3rd generation use with HDMI Audio Extractor

I just bought a new Apple TV4K and wanted to extract the audio from the HDMI port so I tried an Orei 4K Audio Extractor (HDA-912) in the HDMI connection. When I look at the picture on my TV I only get snow. Note: The ATV4K video is only set to 720p.

If I remove the HDMI audio extractor everything works okay. The HDMI audio extractor works with my old ATV3.

I read somewhere that a HDMI extractor stopping working after a software update on ATV4K so suspect HDMI audio separators are not compatible for the ATV4K but I wondering if anyone else had any experience with this.

  • Verify that the adapter is HDCP compliant. Commercial 4K content requires HDCP v2.2 or later. HDCP v1.x would be sufficient for HD content.
  • Verify that the adapter has the wanted HDMI version. Commercial 4K content requires HDMI 2.0 or later.
  • 4K HDR 60Hz 4:4:4 chroma requires HDMI 2.1 or later for all equipment involved, as such HDMI bandwidth would exceed HDMI 2.0 specs. 4:2:0 or 4:2:2 would be just as good though, as all streaming video has 4:2:0 chroma anyway. Chroma subsampling would be a setting on the Apple TV box.

I don’t think that there is any truth to that. tvOS didn’t change HDMI output as such.

Thank you for all the feedback. I just bought a LINDY HDMI 18G Audio Extractor and that works properly with the ATV4K.

I was able to use my television to extract the audio but there are occasions where I want to bypass the television.

I have also had a discussion with Orei about this problem. They think their unit may have a HDCP issue. When the Orei HDMI audio extractor is in circuit the television displays the top part of the screen but the rest is snow. There was one occasion when the television displayed the ATV4K output correctly for a few seconds.
