How do I connect my husband's AirPods to my iPhone after deleting both sets?

I lost an AirPod. I want to switch to my husband's set as he never uses them. I deleted both AirPods info on settings. When I open his case over my phone and hold the button for five seconds, "not your AirPods" comes up. Please advise.
