As everyone know, there is no version of whatsapp for ipad.
When I tried to find out why, I found out that Apple claimed that since the ipad doesn't support sms, there was no version of Whatsapp designed for the ipad.
but my question is, do Android tablets or Windows PC support sms?!!
this really upsets me and I regret buying the ipad.

Apple has nothing to do with it. Meta has chosen for years to not submit an app for the iPad or Mac in the App Store. It is Meta that wants your phone number, which is why they allow you to use the web version on either of those devices to link to an iPhone that does have a phone number.
They do have a Beta version of Desktop WhatsApp for the Mac that can be downloaded from their website, so it is something they can do if they wish without needing SMS. Let Meta know how you feel, they can do it, but they don't want to.

Ask WhatsApp why they have not developed an app for the iPad.
It is the developer's choice what devices they support.
You can use Safari or other browser to access WhatsApp via the web
on your iPad.
The WhatApp developers have not released an App compatible with iPad - the App being currently limited to iPhone.
