Mplayer or Real Player...

Playing .rm and .rmvb files
To play Real Video content on a Mac one has to install Real Player 10 for Mac. Here is a direct link to the free player download (which can be quite hard to find on the main website).

I’m using Mplayer and download Binary codec package, double click to install the codecs then you can view most of the video formats.

These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear/play pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!

Download and install ( or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:

RealPlayer 11.1 for Mac from:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540

Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac-wmv/overview.htm (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)

Perian from http://perian.org/

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/

The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash

(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.

I downloaded it from a torrent transmission

So possibly pirated, possible loaded with malware.

If the programs already recommended to you won't play them, then I would delete them.

LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications. Similar risks apply to using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and similar sites which are prone to malicious hacking: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8420233.stm

If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.

The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.

(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:

http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/

and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)

How did your good friend know his file or stream had no malware? Most servers use a half-dozen programs, and reports to the contrary shoot to the network administrator within seconds: no one can be really sure; also, I can easily corrupt a bittorrent file, should it pass through my machine ⎢period⎥

PS I used to always use 'Real Player', minimized, to listen to Gregorian Chants from the Vatican while l programmed ⎢period⎥ 🙂

Mike

I don't have Real Player installed, but what I use for it instead is VLC.

Have a look at the links on this page
http://service.real.com/test/
and see if your media player or VLC can work with the videos on that link.

It will help you determine whether the problem is with the downloaded file, or your player software.
