MacMini 2010 stalls during Internet Recovery

MacMini 2010 had been little used since about 2020 but would work until recently. I had run it with an external hard disk on High Sierra; the internal drive was Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Now it won't start normally or to the recovery drive. Internet Recovery boots up very slowly and the progress bar stalls about halfway across then the screen blanks. I have attached a couple of external drives with MacOS on them, but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions that might get it working, or is it dead? It's a spare, not my primary computer, but I like to have a working spare.

If the internal hard drive has failed, it could possibly be interfering even when booting to external media.

Personally I would create & use a bootable Knoppix Linux USB stick to attempt booting that old Mini. Knoppix is better at ignoring some drive failures since it doesn't try to mount any volumes unlike macOS which will try & try and even get stuck in the boot process because macOS cannot handle the errors well. You can use the downloaded Knoppix .iso file as a source for Etcher (Mac/Windows/Linux) to create a bootable Knoppix USB stick. Make sure to download an .iso with "EN" in the name for ENglish. Option Boot the USB stick and select the orange icon labeled "EFI".

Make sure to give Knoppix lots of time to boot since the Mac may appear frozen while booting Knoppix until it reaches later in the boot process (issue with Mac firmware not being friendly). If Knoppix boots to the Desktop, then click the "Start" menu on the lower left of the Taskbar and navigate to "System Tools --> GSmartControl". Post the complete GSmartControl report for the internal drive so I can review it. It has been a long time since I provided these instructions so I forget exactly how you access the full health report for the drive (I know there is a button for a "view" option and one to "save" which will provide you with the full report.

High Sierra [...] Internet Recovery

You must use this workaround to access macOS 10.13 High Sierra Internet Recovery (at least a few months ago that workaround worked -- unless that very old issue is finally fixed by now).

AFAIK when booted to Internet Recovery all internal and external drive boot drives should be ignored. But I'd still disconnect any external drive. But a rogue broken internal drive might still intervene.

Thanks a lot. I took the bottom off the 2010 Mini earlier today and found it had sucked in a lot of dust, which I blew out. Now it gets stuck at what looks like the boot process, so this looks promising. I'm busy so I'll need some time to see what I can do, but this gives me some hope.

Thanks. This seems a plausible explanation, although I don't get any error message, just a stall of the progress display that becomes a black screen. But that leaves me wondering what OS the MacMini 10 is running. It was running on 10.13 High Sierra on an external drive, but I think the internal hard drive was on an earlier OS. If am in Internet Recovery (with the world shown on the screen), would the Mac be seeing the OS on the internal drive or the external drive?
