AirPlay is not working after iPadOS 18.4 update on my iPad

I’m using an ipad4, iphone12. AirPlay worked fine until update 18.4. Resetting connections doesn’t help. Can see TV when clicked on in AirPlay but keeps searching and then stops. TV is new Samsung Neo QLED. Everything is on the same network. Did not update iPhone to iOS 18.4 and the AirPlay works fine!

FIX BELOW:

After updating to iPadOS 18.4, many users—including those with iPad Air 4—have experienced AirPlay issues where their TV shows up in the list, but the connection either hangs or fails. This is likely due to a bug in iPadOS 18.4 that affects AirPlay’s ability to maintain connections, even when devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Your iPhone (still on an earlier version of iOS) working fine confirms this is a software issue on the iPad. The Samsung Neo QLED TV is compatible with AirPlay, so it’s not the problem unless its firmware is out of date.

To fix it, first try fully powering off both the iPad and the TV (not just restarting) to clear any cached permissions. Make sure your TV’s firmware is fully up to date via its settings menu. You should also reset your iPad’s network settings (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset Network Settings) and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi band (preferably 5 GHz), and temporarily disable any VPNs. If AirPlay still doesn’t work, the issue is most likely tied to the iPadOS update, and a fix may come in the next patch (like 18.4.1). Until then, using your iPhone for AirPlay may be the best temporary workaround.

Same for me after updating to 18.4 on two different iPads when trying to airplay from Safari/Chrome to Apple TV. IPhones on 18.3.2 are airplaying fine. I found two work-arounds until this is resolved.

  1. Use screen mirroring and then go full screen with video.
  2. For whatever reason, airplay from the YouTube app is working. So I connect to the Apple TV from there and then go back to Safari and then it airplays fine. But if I disconnect YouTube from airplay, it stops again.

This is a known problem that has affected several users. Here are a few things that might help:

1. Check for iOS or receiver compatibility

Sometimes updates like iOS 18.4 can temporarily break compatibility with third-party AirPlay receivers or even older Apple TVs. Make sure both your iPhone and the receiving device are fully updated.

2. Restart everything

It sounds basic, but restarting your iPhone, router, and receiver (like your Apple TV or screen mirroring app on PC) can fix temporary glitches introduced after an update.

3. Reconnect to Wi-Fi

AirPlay requires a strong Wi-Fi connection. After iOS updates, some users reported needing to "forget" and reconnect to their Wi-Fi network to re-enable smooth AirPlay functionality.

Just a note for everyone fighting this like I was: installed the Sonos app and it went through the the discovery process to join the local system. After that I could see all the Airplay devices on my network even the non-Sonos ones. Very curious about how that interaction works but hey now it all is fine again. Sonos app uninstalled and it all works fine still.

After troubleshooting everything, updating tvs, trying other apps successfully I went back to the basics. I swiped down to access the Control Center and selected my airplay source there...and it worked! Will it work again tomorrow, who knows? Is it because I somehow fixed something with all of the other steps, I don't know. But it works if I make the selection by swiping down from the right corner. I hope this helps someone.

Same issue here, not with all aps, YouTube for example still works, but other apps don’t work anymore after update to 18.4.1.

  • tried multiple devices (all on 18.4.1)
  • power off from TV an apple devices
  • power off from network/wifi

looks like an issue caused by iOS app which needs to be fixed in apps in App Store, because not all apps have the issue

Oh no! My guess is that it is device related, as well. I'm using a Roku to cast my Obe Fitness App for my workouts. It hasn't worked at all since the new update; however, the forced pin now works. I haven't checked every single app, but Obe has been the main one that didn't work for me (and the main one that I use to cast to my TV).

This really falls back on Apple, as this 'quick passcode fix' may only be temporary or app-specific.

They need to push an update to fix this bug (and focus on their QC, because they push out so many buggy updates that break things.. :( )

I would recommend that you use Screen Mirroring in the mean time. It's annoying and most of my apps don't support it (forcing me to use a browser instead of the app), but it does work...

Again, this is an Apple issue --- it appears to be a bug that is impacting some apps and devices and not others.

So sorry that this didn't work for you! Waiting with bated breath for Apple to fix this... .

This is likely due to the fix in IOS 18.4.1 to fix the AirPlay RCE bug. Devices from other manufacturers and other IOS devices that have NOT been updated may not work with updated devices. Check your manufacturer to see if there is an update for the device you are trying to connect to.

To see if this might be the case, try using AirPlay from an updated device to an updated device, like your iPhone to your iPad or MAC. This will require your device to be set as an airplay receiver in settings.

I hope this helps.
