AirPlay is not working after iPadOS 18.4 update on my iPad

I’m using an ipad4, iphone12. AirPlay worked fine until update 18.4. Resetting connections doesn’t help. Can see TV when clicked on in AirPlay but keeps searching and then stops. TV is new Samsung Neo QLED. Everything is on the same network. Did not update iPhone to iOS 18.4 and the AirPlay works fine!

FIX BELOW:

After updating to iPadOS 18.4, many users—including those with iPad Air 4—have experienced AirPlay issues where their TV shows up in the list, but the connection either hangs or fails. This is likely due to a bug in iPadOS 18.4 that affects AirPlay’s ability to maintain connections, even when devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. Your iPhone (still on an earlier version of iOS) working fine confirms this is a software issue on the iPad. The Samsung Neo QLED TV is compatible with AirPlay, so it’s not the problem unless its firmware is out of date.

To fix it, first try fully powering off both the iPad and the TV (not just restarting) to clear any cached permissions. Make sure your TV’s firmware is fully up to date via its settings menu. You should also reset your iPad’s network settings (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset Network Settings) and reconnect to Wi-Fi. Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi band (preferably 5 GHz), and temporarily disable any VPNs. If AirPlay still doesn’t work, the issue is most likely tied to the iPadOS update, and a fix may come in the next patch (like 18.4.1). Until then, using your iPhone for AirPlay may be the best temporary workaround.

I am having the same issue with Airplay on iOS 18.4.1. I have followed every step from a Google recommendation to fix along with speaking to Apple Support who basically instructed me to follow the same steps. At the very end I did a full restore from backup but it appears when installing iOS it auto-saved over my previous backup of the previous iOS and now I have lost my save of iOS 17. A factory reset as a last resort is an option but I AFAIA I will not be able to update it to the most recent version of 17, only the shipped iOS or iOS 18.4.1. Which is deeply frustrating. The restore from backup also horrifically messed up all my accounts and apps and it took quite some time to get back to working order.

Coincidently, I had also updated my 2024 MBP to the new version of Sequoia which also has Airplay issues. While it connects to the device it immediately stops streaming after 2 minutes. Other devices (including an iPad that has not been updated) still Airplay without any issue. It is not a network issue as there is no VPN, I have the standard MESH router provided by my ISP (and lots of bandwidth), and no other devices drop out or experience any network related issues.

This is deeply frustrating and the ability to not roll back to a previous version is annoying.

Similarly, HomePod 18.4.1 has rendered my one HomePod mini useless. It functions better playing music on Bluetooth only than it does on WiFi.. which makes no sense to me.. nothing would fix it but I just got it working, it only took wasting 30+ minutes per day for several days in a row to figure something out… I’m looking at an active connection to the same band on the same wifi network on my router’s app, all my issues appear in the Home app.

Here’s what worked for me.

I opened the HomePod from the home app, opened it’s settings and scrolled down to where it shows the WiFi and version info.

I kid you not, that’s all I had to do to get it to start playing.

BUT it’d just start playing whatever I last attempted to airplay and then would almost immediately stop playing as soon as I exited the settings on the home app…

I switched that HomePod to the main home hub and airplay has been working since.

Unfortunately, that takes my locks offline since the manufacturer made the questionable choose to release a Bluetooth model without thread capability.

I’m hoping it won’t get messed up again by switch the hub back to my wired atv but I’m a little scared to change any settings atm.

After updating everything to their latest versions and the resultant bug fest, if your AppleTV is using Ethernet I found that disconnecting it and enabling WiFi instead appears to make things work. The Airplay buttons in various iPad apps still don't function but the you can use the Control Centre to connect. In fact the iPad recognised the AppleTV AirPlay which resulted in a small pop up notification allowing me to connect.

Great new feature Apple, degrade the connection of your more expensive version of AppleTV to get AirPlay working. Yet another bug to add to the ever growing list.

Same problem here when I try to stream from safari on my iPhone 15 Pro to Apple TV. This happened after the update to iOs 18.4. Before the update it worked great. Now it shows the Airplay icon en I can see my Apple TV and other devices in the list. When I select it nothing happens. Only when I use screen mirroring airplay works. This is NOT correct. The new 18.4.1 does not fix the problem. Very very frustrating!! Al my devices are running the latest software.

Found a solution to the problem for MacBook Air (M1).
Download the application for watching videos MKPlayer (free).
Install the extension for Safari MKPlayer Extension.
If the extension “sees” the video on the page,
click the MKP button and in the playback window that opens,
we see the AirPlay button we need. Works stably!

my iPhone 12 pro max worked perfectly when using safari app and wanted to watch a vid or cam on my Apple TV I hit the airplay icon and it would show I have 2 Apple TVs and my Tv set,I’d select one it worked fine…Did the 18.4 update and all it does is spin and don’t connect nor give error,I seen the 18.4.1 update to repair and still having the same issues!!!!Something so common to use with your Iphone and all a sudden don’t work come on Apple!!! Shouldn’t have to try a bunch of different things when you made it stop working…

Same issue. Recently, I updated to Apple’s iOS/iPadOS version 18.4.1 on my iPhone & IPad. Today, I discovered that now Apple’s “AirPlay” (from those updated devices) NO LONGER WORKS to my AppleTV. I even ran the software update on the AppleTV (to AppleTVos 18.4.1), and the restarted it as well as my iPhone & iPad. Still, AirPlay will NOT work. I see my AppleTV in the AirPlay list of devices available to cast/mirror to; but, when I select it (my AppleTV) the spinning wheel occurs and times out without ever connecting. Apple Computer’s software quality control is truly getting worse as time goes on, I am so fed up. I guess Tim Cox is spending too much time shoveling money into brown paper bags to hand over to politicians.

This is odd as airplay works for some apps and not others. Funny that it airplays from Chrome and not from Safari as an example. I’ve now resorted to using an old chromecast to watch a sky tv app, I’ve been using for years and now not possible to airplay. Is there a fix , new update ? Nothing mentioned here has worked .

Just going to put this out there. A friend of mine who had been looking for employment has had a couple of interactions with Apple HR recently. To quote him, they are offering substantially lower pay to the point he called it insulting. Athey have been bottom fishing for quite a while. Old say goes, “You get what you pay for.” In this case updates with no QC. I don’t need the aggravation.
