Kernel panic during Sequoia 15.4 installation on Apple M1 2021 MacBook Pro with Sonoma 14.7.5

Have tried upgrading w 400GB disk space, no apps running.

Make it through Sequoia download, preparing and installation, but always KERNEL PANIC on restart.

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports shows 5x panic-full... reports for 5x times I have tried to upgrade to Sequoia.

1st time all apps on Sonoma 14.7.5 up to date.

2nd time restarted 3x times to clear any updates/locked files and safe mode on last boot, then normal boot and install... failed

3rd time ... tried Recovery Mode, installed Sonoma on top of existing,

Weird, noticed updated for Safari update available from 17.6 to 18.4, so installed it... then tried Sequoia upgrade... failed.

4th time... entered Diagnostics Mode, submitted report to Apple Support... no hardware issues....upgraded Parallels v19 to v20.2.2 because their web site now shows "*" by v19 support and forums show restart issues and kernel panic ... better to be on v20 for tested/supported use... maybe ARM drivers causing issue... then installed Sequoia update... failed.

Not sure where the 5th was... used a new TEST user... all the same failures.... reported to Apple... and Support...

"panicString" : "panic(cpu 0 caller 0x0): t6000dart 0xfffffdf03b568d70 (dart-dispext0): Can't ignore lock validation @t6000dart.c:437\nDebugger message: panic\nMemory ID: 0x6\nOS release type: Not set yet\nOS version: Not set yet ...

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

com.apple.driver.AppleT6000DART(1.0)

com.apple.driver.AppleARMPlatform(1.0.2)

com.apple.driver.IODARTFamily(1)

SEE ATTACHED TEXTLOG FILE.

Just noticed SHUTDOWN_STALL(s) and RESET COUNTER with these Panic Reports. SPINDUMP?

Looking at web/apple forums... this appears to be kernel issue w M1 processor and in past, seems to be resolved by coding fix by Apple.... som refer to FIRMWARE updates for?

Thoughts?/Fixes? I'm scheduled to see Apple tech at Apple Store... Thursday.

PS. I thought maybe install Sequoia v15.0/1 and see if install based and then upgrade... avoid major "leap" of if M1 problems brought into play w later Sequoia release (regression). But I was told Apple hasn't made Sequoia individual downloads available?! I just spent $100 for Parallels update to work with Sequoia...

I would suggest a DFU Firmware Revive or better yet a DFU Firmware Restore. Both of these will reset the secure enclave chip & system firmware. The latter will also reset the internal SSD & push a clean copy of macOS onto the internal SSD. Unfortunately this process requires access to another Mac currently running macOS 15.x Sequoia.

How to revive or restore Mac firmware - Apple Support

FYI, "dart" I believe is Device Address Resolution Table used to delineate hardware and memory on an M-series Mac (internal & external). I'm not certain on the exact name since I'm unable to locate the information with a quick search, but this is what I recall from investigating a year or so ago to assist another user.

If you are seeing this crash with a clean install with no external devices connected and without any third party apps & restore from backup, then you have a hardware issue most likely with the Logic Board.

Edit: Please keep us updated with the results and whatever happens with Apple.

HW Tech - Thanks again. I actually did read your earlier post which was great! As a result of that post, I was looking for examples where someone had tried it successfully for this specific issue. That research led me to the Reddit post.

Since I've never heard of DFU until your post, I am trying to learn what the potential risks might be vs waiting for a possible "15.4.1" update. I was concerned that I might unintentionally brick MacBook and was trying to weigh the pros and cons of DFU vs wait-and-see if an update comes out.

Currently my system is working fine in Sonoma 14.7.5, but won't update to Sequoia.

i have An M3 max MBP since January 2024 and never had any issue, always on, and hooked up to a studio display . and since 15.4 update ( i do not remember is it was during 15.4 install , i do not think so , i had a kernel panic on the 9th of April and i see issues with different apps that i uninstalled and high CPU usage on the Kernel panic log, and this sentence CORE 0 is the one that panicked. Check the full backtrace for details.

but i do not know how to decrypt this , i used Etre Check pro and this app is cool cos it helps you understand a kernel panic

Here's the Kernel Panic, i talked via chat with an Apple Support man but he couldn't help at all. i was sure it was 15.4 , but i do not get how to downgrade to 15.3 or 15.2 ... can someone explain step by step how ? cos a reinstall via recovery , or app store would be 15.4 , do i need a seperate USB drive to boot on ? thanks.

I’m sorry you ran into errors, but this topic isn’t related to your issue.

it's quite crazy how much ppl want to update so much when nothing is broken, trust me i was quite like that and now that my M3 max brand new MBP had one Kernel Panic after 15.4 install , i only run on safe mode and i wish i could downgrade to 15.3 and from now on i will disable auto updates ... but anyone can do what they want, it's not a good look on apple part at all... Apple's Software used to be quite good, but nowadays with IOS and other Apple OS it's quite the opposite...

I fully agree...

This type of issue really pushes customers to delay MacOS upgrades and creates an Apple Support cost to support multiple OS versions.

I actually held back on Sonoma to latest level of 14.7.5 in order to get latest security updates (or if I had issue that I hoped update fixed... I still have nagging issue where window positions are not remembered on multi-display [3] set up while NOT using Stage Manager... problems started when Stage Manager feature made available... windows expand on MBP laptop display versus external monitor, or switch monitor positions so reversed... very frustrating when someone reorganizes your desktop workspace!).

Unfortunately, I thought Sonoma 14.7.5 upgrade to Sequoia 15.4 after 6 months of public usage and 15.0 to 15.4 updates that it would be "stable"... at least for installation on hardware... maybe some glitches w new features like Apple Intelligence etc.

The other challenge is that other Apple devices (iPhone, iPad) should really be at same OS level that is compatible with current release.

I used to work in very large software development lab in system test... focus of testing (regression of software versions, incompatibility testing between versions/releases) was limited based on resources and expected customer scenarios.... large enterprise customers update client/servers at the same time typically... not the case with individual consumers. Integrate cloud integration and development, where software development has changed from waterfall to interative, this is a much bigger problem... requires development team that deeply knows their code, modules, assumptions, interdependencies, history, roadmap, etc.... as well as integrated modules in OS... which requires very experienced senior developers. Sometimes things get missed or prioritized lower (solve later) to meet marketing commitments and customer/market deadlines/expectations.

It is what it is. :)
