GPS accuracy issues on iPhone 16 Pro Max

We have had a hardware test at an apple store and everything is apparently fine. Reset phone (iphone 16 pro max on iOS 18), also deleted and reloaded GPS apps. We stopped using carplay although no change to carplay softare (if that is even possible). GPS is inacurate and often displays that I am on another, incorrect road and suggests turn that do not exist on the road I am on. This is consistently a problem regardless of the vehicle I am in. I get a messages that GPS signal is has a problem - therefore the system is using an approximate location. I will try removing the rather simple, clear cover and any magnetic attachment to the back of the phone. Some suggest turning off bluetooth, toggling airplane mode etc, but many users attempting myriad options is not improving the situation. Surely apple service people are having this problem as well? A second 16 pro max, purchased via AT&T at the same time, does not appear to have the problem.

I have spent more than 1.5 hours on the phone with a very helpful apple customer service person and 45 minutes with a tech in an apple store (who had no idea that this is a fairly prevalent issue). There seems to be no acknowledgement of this issue by Apple to date, let alone recommendations for a fix or any official response that I have seen.

Update. Finally Apple agreed to send another, refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Plus. The newer phone worked perfectly! Excessive amount of time wasted as the hardware ppl (Apple) said it was software and software ppl said it was hardware. Understandably there is a problem regarding who has overall responsibility.

Answering other questions below, this problem was all GPS apps - at least the big 3, Apple Maps, Google and Waze. It didn’t matter whether in a car or out. It was clearly a hardware problem in the end.

Report this to Apple...

Question is: "Just how many people have actually reported this to Apple?"

So, do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of you occurrences, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: on when this issue began, and how you’ve troubleshot it, this far. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

Hello

I have exactly the same issue with an IPhone 16 Pro. The phone is new, it has only 3 weeks. In the Apple Store they found nothing wrong. 3 entire réinitialisations, still the issue. During a complete week of holidays impossible to use the GPS and I came back home and it started to work properly. I found out that the phone has GPS issues when I use one specific pair of shoes which is more isolated from the ground and also when in the car I put the phone over a plastic sheet. It seems to be some kind of electronic interference issue. I have the issue in all the GPS app (plan, maps, even a gps app that provide accuracy).

I don’t know if it’s a bug or if it’s Hardware issue on the phone. I still have the possibility to change the phone but I need to be quick. It’s a real pain because I won’t have any phone for days and I don’t know if it will change anything.

what do you think about replacing the phone?

Hi Jeff:

The GPS angle intrigues me..

For an aside, seems someone from Australia has found their iPads are

showing they've moved on restart. Only: just returned from Singapore.

Their devices all show a specific address in Maryland USA.. GPS Error?

And as of yet, their thread in ASC has no replies; half world away.

..I'm Not directly involved, a shout-out back to Community could help..

.While this regional mess will not allow me to start a New Help thread.

Sorry for the interruption; rather than simply turn page & leave, I mention

this & their iPads all Think they are in Maryland USA. Really are in Australia,

back from Singapore trip. A lengthy post with details shows in blue above.

It's 9AM here in Alaska, trying to be spring near AK Range!

.Found this search result for GPS that might be useful..(?)

PS: address shows in their iPads is an 'auto body shop' in MD USA! Thank you.
