Unable to install macOS Sequoia update 15.4 on my MacBook Pro

Experiencing an issue with installing the macOS Sequoia 15.4 (24E248) software update. Chip: Apple M1 Pro.

The internet connection and power are stable, and I have rebooted the system multiple times, but the issue persists.

Tried updating both via the GUI and CLI:

• CLI: Prompts for a password, then exits without any error, even when using the --verbose flag.

• GUI: Asks for authentication twice, then returns an error without providing any additional details.

We've been facing this at my workplace. I spent some time testing things and the one thing that actually ended up working is running the following script:

sudo softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 15.4 --launch-installer -R

Pretty much pulls the full installer for 15.4 and will download it to your Mac. It should auto launch the installer after (Don't worry it will not wipe the device). If it doesn't auto launch the installer should be in the applications folder in finder.

15.4 is EXACTLY the reason causing all this craps...

If your Mac is working fine, don't do anything.

If you are already facing the same issue, DFU/USB install a 15.3.2

BTW, I did a DFU Restore, couldn't boot.

@ren1018 If you have data that needs to be recovered/backed up go for the ‘revive’ and see if it works. If you already have a backup I would save the time and do the ‘restore’.

For me worked restore only. From a Mini M2 with 13.4. No issue till now on M1 Pro

Your system was updated to 15.4 but it does not work. But for the sonoma installer it looks as you ´re trying to install an older version (sonoma) over the newer version of Mac OS (sequoia).

in my case i had to completely reset my imac, erase the disk and only after that was able to reinstall macOS Sonoma. Luckily i had regular tie machine backups.

sorry but i found no other way to solve this issue

Too bad I didn't come across your post sooner. I tried installing 15.4 from the bootable USB, from System Settings (2x), from the Applications folder, from the App Store, then DFU Revive to finally write a line in the Terminal and 30 minutes later I was running 15.3.2. Thank you very much!

Tried to update from Sequoia 15.3.2 to 15.4 automatically (as auto-update is mandatory in our organization). Update fails and the recovery process starts over and over. Never experienced such a bad update from apple. Trying to work around like described here in the thread is not an option as its my company MacBook. Apple has to provide a decent update.

Apple has just release 15.4.1

Anyone knows if it solves the problem of bootloop and all the problems about this thread?

Yes, Apple just release 15.4.1 and it worked. I just test it on my MacBook and it worked.

Update successfully completed.

Yes, the latest release of MacOS seems to have fixed it for me. I can finally install MacOS again, no more boot loops.

I have the same problem with my M1 MacBook Pro

Apple have now addressed the problem, as of 16/04/25 released 15.4.1 which corrects the installation issue
