Finder Keeps Opening and Closing Repeatedly

Since I purchased my Mac, Finder has been acting up — it constantly opens and closes by itself in an endless loop. I’ve tried force quitting it, restarting the Mac, and installing all the latest updates, but nothing helps. It always comes back afyer a while and starts looping again. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a permanent fix for this issue?

The video shows a bad interaction between Finder and Stage Manager.

I would start by turning off Stage Manager and leaving it off (Full disclosure: as a long time Mac user, I have no use whatsoever for Stage Manager).

If you want to reinstate Stage Manager, try, while it's off, to delete Finder preferences.

To delete Finder preferences: 1) In Finder, press Command-Shift-G and paste ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist 2) Drag the file to the trash 3) Press Command-Option-Escape to open the Force Quit window. Select Finder in the list, and click Relaunch.

Then try turning Stage Manager back on, and see if the problem returns or not.

Turn Stage Manager on or off

You can quickly move back and forth between Stage Manager and traditional windows to use the method that’s best suited for the work you need to do.

On your Mac, do one of the following:

  • Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Desktop & Dock  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Go to Desktop & Stage Manager, then turn Stage Manager on or off.
  • Click  in the menu bar, then click Stage Manager  to turn it on or off.
