Carplay No Longer Works with iOS 18.4 Update • Need Fix ASAP

Everything worked perfectly fine between my iPhone 12 Pro and my 2023 Audi SQ5 until the iOS 18.4 update.

Now, among several other issues, CarPlay is just broke. I cannot connect via "air" nor when I plug into the USB port.

The phone is simply no longer available in the car.

This is how I work, check in with my elder family members, and communicate with my wife & kids.

This "bug" is incredibly inconvenient and irresponsible and should've been caught/squashed before release.

My questions are:

  1. Has ANYONE found a workaround for this issue?
  2. Is there any word from Apple about addressing this issue?

I've tried restarting/rebooting, re-pairing, and restoring with no luck. Been with Apple since 1980s, so I know a bit about troubleshooting – this, however, eludes me. I don't want to downgrade, I just want it to work correctly.

I would be sincerely grateful for any insight to get this issue resolved.

Thank you!

Same here. The minute I upgraded from 18.3 to 18.4 CarPlay disconnects from Bluetooth as soon as I start any app…Waze, SiriusXM, Apple Maps. So frustrating. My car’s entire infotainment system is now useless. My premium Bose sound system is useless. I have to look at my phone to see where I’m going on Google maps. Nice job apple. Really safe for me to be driving this way.

I have exhausted every option that is out there to try and rectify this issue. NONE work. I have a 2023 ASX mitsubishi and the head unit its pretty much useless now. An absolute joke that there is no word from Apple on this. I have the iphone 16. It is the latest, so should work! Paying big bucks for what? All stopped working when I updated to IOS 18.4

2022 Subaru WRX Limited, tether only CarPlay but same issue.

Phone specific remediation:

  • Standard restart (hold volume down and power button and swipe to power off)
  • Force restart [quick press vol up, quick press vol down, hold power until logo appears (it will prompt to power down, do not do anything just keep holding)]
  • Removed car from Bluetooth and CarPlay settings
  • Reset network settings (settings -> general -> transfer or reset iPhone -> reset -> reset network settings)

car specific remediation:

  • Cycled car on & off
  • Restart infotainment system
  • Reset infotainment system
  • Removed phone from Bluetooth, Phone, Carplay, and Device menus
  • Swapped cables for data transfer cables, OEM Apple cables, CarPlay supported cables, an assortment of other cables
  • Tried all 4 USB-B ports that come with my trim [before iOS18, I tested all ports and they all work for CarPlay (useful for passengers to play music)]
  • Disconnected car battery for 1hr (cause why tf not)
  • Entered debug menu for RF reset
  • Used OBD2 port to check all systems (everything checked out)
  • Checked fuses [all good; none (of the proper ones) missing or burnt]
  • Checked for firmware update (latest firmware already installed)
  • Rolled-back firmware update to previous version 2 times
  • Waited for (I think 1 week, can't remember) for it to "self-fix"
  • Contacted a dealership and brought vehicle in to see if they could fix it [they had no idea what the issue was (other workers phones worked on older iOS versions and with Android Auto)]
  • Contacted a Subaru specialist shop and brought vehicle in (still no dice)

I have tried all of these remediation attempts multiple times and in various orders just in hopes for something to work but everything I have tried and know to try have fallen flat. This is a pretty significant impact on my life since I drive so much (sometimes a whole day on the road) and 1. having maps at a glance is safer than looking at my phone for directions; 2. playing music helps keep me awake while driving if its been a long day or trip.

*Only Bluetooth audio works which is a "workaround" for now but not having maps is a big issue.*

The only thing I can think of is either the update that was supposed to fix CarPlay issues and improve security issues, has deemed my car not secure enough and thus won't allow communication between car and phone or Subaru's firmware doesn't recognize or support the new update. I couldn't say which is more likely but it seems like a failure on Apple's part since its not just Subarus that are effected.

Either way, tethered CarPlay has little-to-no issues compared to wireless CarPlay which makes this even more confusing.

Please reply to this post with any other remediation steps or techniques I have not mentioned and if they were successful or not.

Can't say, as I bought mine yesterday, and it asked to upgrade (from 18.3) to 18.4 during the migration process (from the older iPhone).

But it's clearly not stable, and another issue I have is that the camera doesn't work in video mode when connected via CarPlay... The screen freezes/unfreezes constantly and you can't record (again, only in video mode... and this affects both the front- and backside cameras).

Would be interested to get some feedback on this, if someone can try...

(I was trying to film a car's cruise control's malfunction, I'm not typically filming when driving... ;-))

18.4.1 did not fix my issue which I didn't I have back under 18.3. I will say that if I reboot the infotainment on my 2024 Chevy truck by holding down the call end button for 20 seconds or so that it reconnects right away to the CarPlay. Subsequent connections are hit and miss, but mostly miss, maybe always miss. Also, the system does connect to my iphone, just not the CarPlay, so at least something works when the CarPlay doesn't. I am tired of unpairing and repairing my iphone to try and make this work. Maybe another iOS update or android auto will fix this but I didn't seem to have this problem before a couple weeks ago. It is very frustrating.

Same Apple CarPlay stopped working via Bluetooth neither using the cable. I updated to 18.4.1 and it didn’t fix the problem. I haven’t been able to navigate CarPlay more than 1-2 minutes, the iPhone connects and disconnects constantly all the time. It’s useless!
