Is my iPhone safe after a liquid spill?

Hi everyone,

Had a bit of an accident yesterday. My friend accidentally spilled his beer all over the table, and on the same table were our phones and my iPhone. Liquid damage wasn't that bad, most of the liquid went on the screen protector itself, but the rest of the phone works just fine after I cleaned it. Lightning port also works great, since I used the Lightning earpods today.

I am worried about future, so far everything is fine, but should that be the same in the future? I know iPhones are waterproof and very durable, but still sceptical about that :D

Hi!

Sorry to hear about the spill—glad your phone made it through okay!

The good news is, iPhones (especially models from iPhone 7 onward) are rated with varying degrees of water resistance. For example, recent iPhones have an IP68 rating, which means they can handle being submerged in water up to a certain depth (usually around 1.5 to 6 meters depending on the model) for a short time. So a splash of beer, especially if most of it landed on the screen protector, likely didn’t do much harm—especially since your Lightning port and other features are still working fine.

That said, “water-resistant” isn’t the same as “waterproof,” and these protections can degrade over time, especially after drops, exposure to heat, or even just regular wear and tear. Also, liquids like beer are a bit more corrosive than plain water due to sugars and alcohol, so if anything did seep in, it might cause issues later, even if everything seems fine now.

What you can do:

  • Monitor it over the next few days. Look out for any odd behavior like screen glitches, charging issues, speaker problems, etc.
  • Avoid charging if you think it’s still damp. But it sounds like you’ve already used the Lightning port with no problems, which is a great sign.
  • Consider backing up your phone just in case anything does go wrong down the line.
  • If you’re really worried, an Apple Store or repair tech could open it up and inspect for any lingering residue or corrosion—but if it’s working perfectly, it may not be necessary.

In short, if it survived the initial spill and is working 100%, you’re probably in the clear. Just keep an eye on it. You got lucky this time!
