Why can't I click on the rectangle icons on my MacBook Pro?

Why do I see the rectangle with the arrow on my desktop. I actually have two of them and I can't click on them. I also am finding when I am on a document or website it sizes it full screen or all go into the background without me doing anything. Is it related? Can both be fixed
