On my iphone, can I select which applicatons will use CarPlay and which ones will not?

This used to work:

• Use CarPlay for Spotify, phone calls, and messages.

• My iphone is connected to the vent on the left, where I like to display Google Maps navigation. I do not want Google maps to display the the car's navigation system.

All of the sudden, this no longer works. Google maps automatically connects to Carplay and displays on the car's navigation system.

I have tried the following:

• Removed Google Maps from CarPlay's Menu (Settings ==>General ==> CarPlay ==> select my car ==> Home Screen Icons ==> Remove Google Maps). Note: This seems to only control what is seen on my car's navigation system, not what will connect to CarPlay.

• Uninstall and reinstall Google Maps

• Rebooted my phone

I have seen many posts with the same issue, but have not found a resolution that works for me.
