Why did the 0.5x zoom of iPhone 13 Pro Max's camera suddenly stop working?

Why did the .5 of my camera on my old iphone 13 pro max stop working?

I had to get a new phone but I was wondering what could have made it stop functioning out of no where?

Something mechanical or electrical quit functioning as designed. It could the result of normal wear and tear, but may also be the result of the iPhone being exposed to drops/shocks, moisture, heat, cold and other factors.
