Compression on new MacBook Pro fails to reduce PNG image folder size compared to last year's model

I have a folder with images (PNG format) on my MacBook Pro. The folder is 51.6 MB in size. When I compressed this folder last year, I got a zip file of 16 MB. Now I have a new MacBook Pro (M4, late 2024, with the latest version of macOS Sequoia -- 15.4), and when I compress the same folder, the resulting zip file is suddenly 51 MB. How is it possible that the same folder with the same images can now hardly be compressed anymore?

Of course it would be software.

However, PNG files should already be compressed. The new logic may be skipping them. Normally, attempting to compress a file that is already compressed will actually make it larger. So you should review how you created those PNG files originally if you were ever able to compress them down to 16 MB.

I just tried it on my old MacBook Pro from 2018, that's also running on Sequoia right now. The problem is occurring here as well. Could it be related to the operating system rather than the hardware?
