I just loaded my new iPad Air ands food und that none of my existing apple cords will work
is there an adapter I can buy to go fro the old connection to the new?

As Rudegar has mentioned, there are numerous USB-C to USB-A adapters available. They are sold by, not only Apple, but many third-party sources.
Alternately, you can get a USB-C power adapter for this purpose as well as Apple, like many other manufacturers are moving to using USB-C ports worldwide.
