Dock and Finder issues since Sequoia 15.4 update

Since I updated to Sequoia 15.4 I have problems with the Dock and Finder. On some startups the dock is missing and I have to open the Terminal and enter the "killall Dock" command to make it reappear. Other times the Finder gives me troubles. It doubles the Applications list in the folder that I have in the Dock. After I enter the Terminal command "killall Finder", the issue disappears but sometimes it comes back.

I have tried to reset the Dock to default with the Terminal command:

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

But the Dock issue sometimes returns.

I did not have these issues with previous versions of Sequoia or Sonoma.

The current stable release of Sequoia including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 15.4.1 - I would start there.

Shut down and restart more than once after you update is advised, and compare your results.

To be proactive you can file a bug report / submit your Apple Feedback here: Product Feedback - Apple

To skip the Q&A session, just download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

It’s a diagnostic tool that doesn’t change your computer at all. It gives you a clear and easy-to-read list of both your hardware and software

You can get it for free or pay for extra features. And don’t worry, the report won’t reveal any personal information.

Once you’re done, just " Copy report " and paste the full report using the Additional Text Icon.

Lastly - should you decide to use and post the Report now or at a later time, we are willing to have a very close look and offer some insights

PS Current version of this application is version 6.8.10

Interesting of what changes effected the Dock's behavior for that switch...

There may be some corruption in Dock plist file.

When the problem is presenting itself - that is, you have the box checked to automatically hide, but the Dock stays visible, run the following line in Terminal and tell us the result:

defaults read com.apple.dock autohide

What is the output? It should type out "1". Does it show "0" instead?

Repeat the command after you toggled the setting off and on and hiding is working. Does it now say "1"?

I am not sure if I understand, but it does seem to me that all you need to do is twirl these sections open.

Hover the cursor near the word "Favorites" (for example) in the Sidebar. A ">" should appear. Click it to disclose all the Favorites. Repeat for "Locations", etc. You can also use the same procedure to reverse this and hide sections of the sidebar, when they are showing, by clicking on "V" in the same way.

The issue unfortunately appears just random and not very often. If I would create a new admin user and use that instead of my main one, I have to reconfigure many things which would be a lot of work.

For now, when it happens I use the temporary workaround by putting the sorting order of the folders to kind and afterwards back to name.

I am confused. Where exactly are changing the sorting order? Not in Dock, surely… can you elaborate, and maybe post a screenshot of that part of the Dock, and of where you are changing the sort order?

After updating to Sequoia 15.4.1, sidebar in finder is not responding to configuration changes. In finder settings->sidebar-show the items in the sidebar. The only items that will display are Favorites: iCloud/Shared and Locations: MacBook/Mac/OneDrive(s). I have performed the following: Unchecked/rechecked while active only Locations responds. Unchecked all, rebooted, no change. Checked all, rebooted, no change. Removed all Tags, added all Tags, rebooted, no change. Oddly, in locations, I have unchecked MacBook Air, but it still appears in sidebar.

Does anyone have a fix????

That is not the issue, there is no problem in toggling the items that are displayed. The problem is the actual funcitonality of the sidebar in settings. In "Finder Settings" window, if you enable (Check) the "show these items in the sidebar:" regardless of if they are checked or not checked the sidebar configuration does not change. Even after closing window, rebooting, etc.

Yes, I'm 100% positive...I have toggled ">" both open and closed, when closed Favorites, iCloud, and Locations as "parent" folders, screen shot captures toggled "open"...favorites (no subfolders/config'd settings show) and no configured settings from screen shot appear. Also in the screen shot you can't see the dropdown list ">" toggled open or closed, since it isn't the active window.... I have resolved the issue, I uninstalled the update...thanks tho.

Upgraded to 15.4.1 today and I'm getting erratic cursor behavior and OS issues on my 2023 MacBookPro.

Trying to do screen grabs (command shift 4) and I get strange behavior and takes numerous attempts for it to probably drag-n-grab the selection.

Try to open an image in Preview only to have the Open menu item not function (no dialogue box comes up)

Just a few erratic behaviors with the mouse/cursor actions. (Perhaps a Logitech upgrade needed).
