Thank you. Switching cables worked. And reminded me that I'd previously solved this problem by randomly swapping cables. Interestingly the cable that worked was not an Apple product, which I'd resisted using. Lesson learned.
Check the cable - try a different one. Make sure the ports on the Mac and Phone are clean of lint and dust.
Apple cables are among the very best-- and among the most expensive. Just make sure that the cables you buy are meant to transfer data in addition to power.
