All ports closed after Sequoia 15.4.1 update ?

Hi all.

I have a weird problem after updating Sequoia 15.4.1 on both my Intel and M3 Pro Mac's

I noticed that when going to canyouseeme.org that all the ports i had open earlier are now closed and i did check my router. They were still all there configured right. Both Mac's have the same local IP they always had so it was not because the update or restart changed any local IP's

So nothing changed, only Sequoia 15.4.1 Update ? anyone else experience this.

Thx

You have configured open ports on your router/firewall hardware using port forwarding so those ports are being directed to certain IP addresses/devices on your internal network. As long as you can confirm on the hardware firewall device, that the open port/port forward is still configured, and pointing to the current IP address of the computer that services that port, and there is no other firewall between the hardware firewall and the computer that services that port, then the issue is the firewall on the computer, as the online test would be testing the computer firewall. You need to open those ports at the computer's firewall. Maybe you had the MACs firewall OFF before, and now after the update, the MAC firewall is now ON?

I go into SYSTEM SETTINGS/NETWORK to check the firewall there- either 'Active' or 'Inactive' which is probably your 'Passiv' setting if you are translating another language. You can also verify your IP address there by clicking on your network connection and going to DETAILS and and scrolling down to check. My guess is the IP address - as I am assuming the firewall on the MAC is OFF (Passiv). Nothing you do with the MAC's OS version is going to change the settings on your router/firewall, so I am assuming that it is as it was before and it was working before. On the MAC, it can get another IP if DHCP, or maybe was set static before and it is now DHCP due to the OS update.. I know you mentioned it's correct but it's the only thing I can think of with the info I have, assuming the MAC firewall is indeed OFF and the MAC is on the network the same as before (same network). I have VLANS at home so when something happens, the first thing I check is that the computer is on the correct wireless network (not on my guest or IOT network LOL).

Hmmm, do you only have the one MAC? Do you have any other computer (even a Windows PC?). If you have another PC, you can test by disconnecting the MAC, connecting the other computer after setting the correct IP manually on it, and disabling its firewall. Connect it to the network and run the test at that website. You can also test using another website such as the 'Shields Up' test at GRC.COM.

If it still shows the port(s) as closed the issue may be the firewall device but as it hasn't changed as far as I know from the info here, I would only, worst case- reboot it if possible after testing with another computer set with the correct IP/no firewall.

I have to Mac's connected to the same router via cable, one M3 Pro and an Intel and both was updated to 15.4.1 and both shows the torrent port i use in Transmission app is now closed even i have opened it in the router.

I did not change anything before or after the update that's why I'm surprised it's now closed. Port 49152 i open in the router and both Mac's have the same local IP as always. If i go to canyouseeme.org it shows my real IP ofcause and not my local computer IP but if i try enter for example 49152, is shows as closed also there. Even the normalt port 21, 22, 53, 3389, anything other than port 80 is closed. If you go to canyouseeme.org and look on the right side it shows the common Ports and when i try any of those accept 80, they are closed ??? insane. and yes i did restart both Mac's multiple times ofcause the only thing i didn't reboot yet is the router.

Also the Transmission app still works, i can start a download and it works it's just showing the port is closed and strange also any port other than 80 is closed when testing at canyouseeme.org on both my Mac's with 15.4.1 ??

I can still connect to my website ftp folders and also both my NAS's. Actually i don't have anything not working only that ports are showing as closed. Really confusing but the part that make me must scared is all ports shows as closed on canyouseeme.org so thats would suggest that they are closed.

Hi there.

No i don't use anything other than the router to open ports. I never changed or touch anything port related on the Mac it self, only in the router port forwarding section. I'm not sure what the files your talking about is but i did noticed that after any OS update i always have a folder called "Moved items" or "Previously Relocated Items" in the /users/shared folder. Normally i delete those but this time i actually saved it some where, i don't know why but i did for the first time ever.

I just check and the only folder inside that old moved folder is a folder called "ssh.system_default" and i can see the files in there is called the same as the ones at /etc/ssh/

So is there something i need to do ? As i said earlier i have never changed anything port related on the Mac it self unless it's something i did without knowing :(

Hi. I just checked OS Firewall and it is still OFF (Passiv) ? super strange.

The only reason i know this is because i used Transmission torrent client and when into settings and saw to my surprise that the normal port was closed and it has always been open because i open it in my router and still is. But now Transmission says it closed after 15.4.1 update. Weird

Thx for trying.

Yes my Firewall is inactive and my network local IP is the same as before the update and i'n not on WIFI i always use cable here so i can't figure out what can be the reason.

Actually it's even more strange. It's the samer thing on my Intel. So both my M3 Pro and my Intel Macbook pro both updated to 15.4.1 from 15.4 and now have this issue.

Hi and thx again for trying to help and figure it out √ But no the Transmission torrent app is the same as it was on macOS 15.4 so no change there but as you said, maybe it is another story under 15.4.1 ? but then also canyouseeme.org says all my ports are closed accept port 80 and that would not be wrong right. Yes i have access to my NAS and FTP website servers but if i undertand right that is out or am i wrong ? should i not have access to my NAS's if all ports was closed ?

Apr 19, 2025 8:44 AM in response to Barney-15E

alright. thx for all your help. i restarted my router but that didn't change anything. Port still shows as closed ?

Not sure whats going on. My apps showing ports are closed and also canyouseeme.org shows all port is closes accept port 80.

It was not like that before i updated from 15.4 to 15.4.1 so something changed in my situation at least and it is both on my Apple Silicon Mac and my Intel Mac.
