Can playing an audio SMS from an unknown number compromise my iPhone?

Today, I received an audio message from an unknown phone number, and I accidentally played it. I didn't have latest 18.4.1 installed. How do I ensure I'm not hacked? Do I need full reset?

You can't be hacked by playing an audio message. It's VERY difficult and HUGELY expensive to hack an iPhone. The only people who should be concerned are people at the highest places, such as Senators, Congressman, Ambassadors, CEO's of $Multi-Billion dollar corporations. If you're not such a target, simply listening to an audio message isn't going to put you at risk.

1. Nah
Got message from unknown number pretending it's my local mobile provider.
2. Audio message is just an white noise or smth like that
3. Apple announce CoreAudio vulnerability today, that gives root when playing certain sounds

If you believe that then...

Make sure your data is safely stored off the phone eg cloud storage then

Erase all content & settings and do not restore a backup.

Rebuild manually.

NIST – CVE-2025-31200

"A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved bounds checking. This issue is fixed in tvOS 18.4.1, visionOS 2.4.1, iOS iOS 18.4.1 and iPadOS 18.4.1, macOS Sequoia 15.4.1. Processing an audio stream in a maliciously crafted media file may result in code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS."

On iPhone 12 with any recent iOS-Version installed, it’s very very very hard to get hacked by any means. It is almost safe to say that it’s impossible to get hacked by playing an audio message received by short message services. I’ve never heard of anybody, be it some Expert from Malwarebytes or another reputable source, to warn of audio messages. In my experience, you should have no worries.
