You are right. That shouldn’t be happening at all. I’m not sure if Apple still does service on old iPhones like that? Perhaps one of the other community members would know.

If they do, I suggest you take the device to a Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) so they can run diagnostics on it and try to zero in on the problem:

If that iPhone 6s has never had its battery replaced, and particularly if the battery health is 80% or lower, it is now time to decide whether to replace the battery, or to replace the iPhone.

If the battery health is 80% or lower, or if the described battery-depletion misbehavior continues, this iPhone still needs either a replacement battery or a repair or wholesale replacement, or it’s going to continue to fade.
