Allegedly you get 3 months of Apple TV when you buy a new phone but it still charges you one month to get the free months. Is it 3 months free or buy a month and get 3 months free? If it’s a free trial why is it charging me on day one?

It sounds like you have already used a 1 month free trial. Since this offer is for a 3 month free trial, you need to pay for the first month that you had already got for free, then you will be able to use the additional 2 months free. You cannot stack the free trials by using them more than once. In most cases you are not eligible for the free trial if you had used it before, but in this case, Apple will still give you the benefit of the additional 2 months free after the first month is paid for.
If you were to buy another iPhone, you would not get an additional 3 months free trial.
