Media Library Streams slowly to AppleTV

I have about 300mps internet at home, and the 4K Apple TV attached to a 4K LG TV.

I import my home videos (usually 4K) into my Library via the AppleTV app on my Mac, and I believe the files are uploaded and stream from iCloud. (not easy to determine this).

If I have a video that is longer than a minute or two, it takes forever (if at all to start streaming). I don't want to downgrade the video to say 1080 or 720, which may or may not help the situation.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be very much appreciated.

Your Mac Library from the Apple TV app there, can be made available on the Apple TV box through Home Sharing, and the Computers app. Is that what you were doing? That would not be using iCloud. Your home videos do not get uploaded anywhere just from adding it to your Library. Home Sharing requires that the computer is running and sharing the library. On older Macs (with iTunes), Home Sharing is configured a bit differently. Any wait time could come from waking the computer from sleep mode, perhaps? Home Sharing uses your home network only, so your ISP plan is irrelevant for this part.

Home videos should be in .mp4, .mov, or .m4v format, with H.264 AVC or H.265 HEVC video and AAC (or AC3) audio. For best performance, media files can be “optimized” by putting the metadata at the start of the file, instead of normally at the end of the file, as well as interleaving streams by time chunks. While optimal, it is not strictly needed for modern equipment and OSes, as the computer can read the media file plenty fast enough normally with fast chips and SSD disks.

If you want to try for the effects of optimizing, then you can use e.g. Subler. Just open a file and then save as «new name», with Optimize checked. Then (re-)import the resulting file into your library. You may want to remove the previous version first from the library.

Alternatively, your home videos in the Photos app can be made available on the Apple TV box through iCloud Photo Library, and the Photos app on the Apple TV box.

Alternatively, there are other third party solutions to sharing content from a computer (or NAS) to your Apple TV box.

Plex, Infuse, VLC, etc.

Then explain why the vast majority of users don’t have this problem. I certainly don’t and I stream 4K movies from my M1 Mac Studio Max via home sharing and the Computers app.

Having 300 mbps internet has nothing to with your home network. What is the connection between your Apple TV and your Mac? WiFi, ethernet, etc? If via WiFi then the further away from your home WiFi router your Mac or your Apple TV are the slower the connection speed will be. If the connection is hardwired (both devices are connected to your router with ethernet cables) then are those cables capable of carrying high bit rate traffic. Are they Cat5 or Cat 6?

No, no they don’t. My home setup is proof of that.

Your home set up works for you, doesn't work for me. I have an M3 MBPro with 64gb of RAM. I tried Home Sharing with the computer sitting right next to my AppleTV and LG TV. Same thing, stutters every few seconds.

I then tried playing via Airplay - same problem - stuttering every few seconds. I finally tried screen mirroring - worked perfectly from anywhere in the house.

So yes, Apple need to fix this.

Thank you for this - very helpful. Confirms what I thought, that it is messy for large files. I have "imported" two long (30 minutes+ 4K) videos into my Home Sharing Library, and when they do finally appear, they play a few seconds at a time, then stop. My AppleTV is top of the line, and I clear all the apps before starting a video. Apple needs to do something to improve this. Great for low res shorter files, but not for longer hi-res.
