How do I reformat my Seagate Plus drive on iMac?

I just installed updated software Sequoia 15.3.1 to my iMac. I have the Segate Plus Drive as my time machine backup. At the end of the software upgrade, the message came that I would need to reformat the Senate Plus Drive in order to record backups. To=day I have a message that the backup will only READ. How do I solve this issue?

Your files have not been successfully backed up. The Seagate drive is read-only, so Time Machine cannot create new backups.

You can try the follow steps to see if works:

step 1: Open Disk Utility:

Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, or search "Disk Utility" with Command + Space.

step 2: (Optional) Backup Important Data:

If you have important old backups on the drive, manually copy them to another drive or your Mac before erasing.

step 3: Format the Seagate Drive:

In Disk Utility, select your Seagate Backup Plus Drive.

Click the "Erase" button at the top.

Set:

Name: (Any name, e.g., "Time Machine Backup")

Format: Choose APFS (recommended) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Scheme: Choose GUID Partition Map.

Click Erase to reformat the drive.

step 4: Set Up Time Machine Again:

After formatting, go to System Settings > General > Time Machine.

Add your newly formatted Seagate drive as the backup disk and start backing up.

I get this message just now: Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”

Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it is read-only.
So are my files backed up ?

If the Drive has been formatted to a Microsoft Windows format >> NTFS Format <<

That would explain why nothing can be Written to the drive

macOS can Read from NTFS Drive but Can Not Write to that drive

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac

Choose APFS / GUID Partition Map

Nothing to fix

Time Machine Backup Utility will mark the drive as Read Only

Though, only TM Backup can write TM Backup Snapshot to that drive

Connect a storage device to your Mac

Connect an external storage device, such as a USB drive or Thunderbolt drive, to the appropriate port on your Mac. Identify the ports on your Mac.

  • Use a storage device with at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac. For example, if your Mac has 1TB of storage, your backup disk should ideally have at least 2TB of storage. If Time Machine needs more storage space, your Mac will let you know.
  • Use your Time Machine backup disk only for Time Machine backups, not for storage of other files.*
