How can I fix Bluetooth audio issues after updating to iOS 18?

So, I had an iphone 14pro 512gb, and started having this problem after I updated to ios18. The problem persists and is the same on multiple bluetooth devices such as 2 different Toyota factory stereos, a Ryobi bluetooth work radio, and Anker liberty earbuds. It is also present on calls, and the calls generally drop, making my phone next to worthless for phone calls when driving. Everything bluetooth doesn't work right. While streaming Pandora, Apple Podcasts, or even my internal music library it will break up, sometimes stop playback, and if it keeps playing after this happens the audio becomes distorted, like an old record speeding up or slowing down, as if the codec is trying to fit the song into the remaining time. Here is what I have done:

-Restarted phone.

-Reset Phone

-Unpaired all bluetooth accessories, and repaired them.

-Completely wiped the phone and restored from backup.

-Gone to the Apple store, they reset my carrier settings, no difference.

-Apple suggested a "Clean Install" of all 100 of my apps, and lose all my databases, signal chats, encrypted app databases, and all my photos. But suggested that I could "Pay for more iCloud Storage" to back up all my photos and videos. Apple thinks it's OK to lose everything, and as an added bonus, pay apple more money for more cloud storage. Not a solution. The bluetooth stack and your phone app and phone calls shouldn't be affected by other apps databases.

-Went to T-Mobile, and traded the phone in for a new iPhone 16pro 512gb, which is doing exactly the same thing, so not bad hardware. I've Queried Grok with this problem, and it found similar instances of bluetooth issues with iOs 18.x, along with the fact this started when I installed Ios 18.x, which suggests this could be a software bug...

I'm going to tentatively post that I have figured out the problem. The problem in question happened relatively frequently, sometimes happening almost immediately, other times happening after 15 minutes of listening. I have now listened to several hours of streaming, and it's cleaned up, so I'll tentatively say its *Fixed. Since I have a strong tech background, here is my analysis:

-What the problem appeared to be: A VPN installed on the phone, in this case PIA (Private Internet Access).

-What does a VPN have to do with this issue?: Most VPN's include some kind of firewall, which generally are used to: 1. verify that nothing "leaks" past the firewall when the VPN is enabled so all traffic is routed through the VPN. 2. VPN's like PIA and others will use their firewall block domains used for ads, trackers, and malware.

-In order for a software firewall to do it's job, it has to insert itself into the communications stack at the appropriate layer in order to keep an eye on the data. In an I.P. stack (not Bluetooth) this might typically be the transport layer. Bluetooth has communication layers too, of which I'm no expert, but it has something similar.

-Software firewalls become unstable eventually, and when they do, they cause crazy problems. Back in my I.T. help desk days, Norton Internet Security's firewall was a constant problem. Little Snitch on the mac once caused my iPhoto library to only sync certain photos and not others. My opinion is they all eventually go bad, and when they do, shutting them off does nothing. You have to remove it and restart the device, so it's memory resident startup items no longer load. Removing PIA *Seems* to have fixed this, so if your reading this, and having a similar problem, look for anything on your iPhone that is, or could be a software firewall, kill it and retest.

So, resetting the phone clears this up for ~8-10 hours, then you have to reset again. It's like a buffer is filling up. I ran an A.I. search and found that there are hundreds of other users complaining about the same problem in forums like Reddit. Some of them tried everything I tried, and even started from scratch, with the problem persisting. This appears to be a bug. I think Apple changed something in iOS 18.

Bluetooth interference can potentially cause connectivity issues due to the disruption of the wireless communication between devices. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency range, which is also used by various other devices such as Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, cordless phones, and even some baby monitors. When multiple devices are operating nearby and using the same frequency band, interference can occur.
