How can I return an iPad I found at a thrift store?

I found and iPad at the goodwill bins outlet, its locked and im not sure if it was donated on purpose or not. what do I do? Can I find the owner? Or can I use it? Not sure what year it is either. So I selected one I believe has the old wide charger plug.

Return it to the store where it was found. Whether an item for sale or something a customer left accidentally, the store has the best chance of resolving this. You cannot get the owner's contact information, and Apple will not reveal it.

Sorry, I did not read "found" as "paid for."

Without the original owner resetting the iPad to factory condition, you will never be able to use it. If the store does not take returns, recycle it responsibly. If you have an Apple retail store near, they will recycle it.

Some office supply chains take electronics recycling. As I am 100 miles from the nearest Apple Store, I now take all our old tech gear to Staples, which is two miles away:

Note the very generous list of items they accept a the bottom of that page
