That is most likely to be a Hardware failure in the display assembly.
It is possible (but not likely) that other trivial physical issues such as cable loose at the computer-end might be causing such issues. If you have an Apple-Owned store available, you can make a Hardware-issue Genius Bar appointment for a FREE evaluation, and they can quote a FIRM cost to fix. You should take advantage of this service if you can.
